A daytime community family member is on the front lines of the coronavirus pandemic. Ash Harris, the son of veteran soap star Vincent Irizarry (ex-David Hayward, All My Children), is part of the team racing to set up an emergency field hospital in New York City's Central Park.
The construction of a 68-bed emergency field hospital in New York City's Central Park is underway, and one of the team members helping to get the operation set up in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic is connected to the daytime community. Veteran star Vincent Irizarry (ex-David Hayward, All My Children; ex-Dr. Jordan Armstrong, The Bold and the Beautiful; ex-Deimos Kiriakis, Days of our Lives; ex-David Chow, The Young and the Restless; ex-Lujack Luvonoczek, Guiding Light) shares that his son, Ash Harris, is helping out in the COVID-19 crisis.
The proud dad took to Twitter to share the heartwarming news, writing, "To all my dear friends in NYC, my son Ash arrived there yestrday w/ Samaritan's Purse & a team of respiratory specialists 2 set up a field hospital in Central Park... He says the'yll be there until the need has passd..."
According to NBC New York, the emergency field hospital is being specially designed as a respiratory care unit and is a partnership between Samaritan's Purse and Mount Sinai Health System. It is expected to open on Tuesday.
Samaritan's Purse is a crisis and disaster response organization that specializes in meeting critical needs in the world's most troubled regions, often working through ministry partners already on the scene of a crisis. The organization most often mobilizes staff and volunteers to provide emergency aid when hurricanes, tornadoes, and other storms strike.
The U.S. is now reporting more than 140,000 active coronavirus cases -- the highest total in the world. New York City is currently the nation's epicenter for the disease, which has killed around 2,400 people across the country.
Ash Harris, Irizarry's eldest child, was born in 1989 and served in the U.S. military. He follows two All My Children stars in the battle against COVID-19: Kelly Ripa (ex-Hayley Santos) and Mark Consuelos (ex-Mateo Santos) recently donated $1 million toward coronavirus relief efforts.
The COVID-19 pandemic has affected the daytime world in a myriad of ways. All four daytime dramas have gone on hiatus, the Daytime Emmy Awards have been canceled, The Young and the Restless' Greg Rikaart (Kevin Fisher) is recovering after having tested positive for the virus, and playwright Terrence McNally, who played Dr. Robert Lynch on Y&R in the early 90s, died of complications from the virus earlier this month.
To learn more about the need for social distancing during the coronavirus pandemic, soap fans can watch a COVID-19 PSA that features Patrika Darbo (ex-Nancy Wesley, DAYS; ex-Shirley Spectra, B&B) and Danny Woodburn (ex-Ken, B&B; ex-Demon Elf, Passions).
