Gachiakuta is one of the most highly anticipated anime in the upcoming Summer 2025 season. Its unique premise and star-studded production team have raised expectations. The show is based on the manga of the same name, created by Kei Urana, which has been serialized in Kodansha’s Weekly Shonen Magazine since February 2022.

The manga has 139 chapters at the time of writing and is beloved by readers. As a result, there is understandably a lot of hype surrounding the anime, which is scheduled for release on July 6, 2025. New episodes will air weekly at 11:30 p.m. JST.

Gachiakuta follows Rudo Surebrec, a young boy who lives in the slums of the Sphere, discriminated against by most. The only person who truly shows compassion towards him is his foster father, Regto, who helps Rudo live in a more fulfilling manner. Unfortunately, Rudo’s life drastically changes after Regto is killed and he is framed for his murder.

Judged guilty with no trial, Rudo is thrown into the Abyss, where the world’s trash is dumped. Rather than giving up, however, Rudo’s rage against society only grows, as he swears to return to the Sphere and gain his revenge.

Once in the Abyss, Rudo witnesses all sorts of fantastical things, ranging from trash beasts to an organization wielding supernatural powers called the Cleaners. Though Rudo initially joins the Cleaners as a means of returning home, he soon forms valuable bonds and even discovers his own powers of being able to manipulate waste and discarded items.

This sets him off on a journey filled with chaotic adventure, shocking deceit, and exhilarating suspense. Though Rudo is a young and naive boy, over time, he fits into the role of a hero who wishes to protect those around him, be it in the Abyss or the Sphere.

As mentioned, the anime will be released on July 6, 2025, though a global pre-screening event will be held on July 4, 2025. CBC, TBS, and other affiliates will air the series, while global audiences can stream it on Crunchyroll.

Gachiakuta will be adapted by Bones Film, a subsidiary of Studio Bones, which recently made the My Hero Academia: Vigilantes anime. It will be directed by Fumihiko Suganuma, an industry veteran who has worked on projects like The First Slam Dunk and Angel Beats!

Satoshi Ishino and Yoshino Matsumoto will serve as chief animation directors and character designers. Fumuyuki Gou will direct the sound, while Taku Iwasu will handle the music.

Hence, Gachiakuta is being made by tried-and-tested professionals who have left their mark on several genres. Paledusk performs the opening theme, “HUGs,” and DUSTCELL performs the ending theme, “Tomoshibi.”

Should you watch the Gachiakuta anime?

The source material uses a lot of graffiti art, created by Hideyoshi Andou, which helps the visuals pop out and makes the narrative far more immersive. With each chapter, the stakes only get higher and higher, leading to intense fights using Vital Instruments.

At the heart of the series, however, are its characters. Rudo is a compelling protagonist whose turbulent life will have fans hooked to their screens. An equally unforgettable team joins him, whether it is the Cleaners, the antagonists, or any other group.

While Gachiakuta pays homage to shonen traditions, it carves out its own path and refuses to be restricted by any stereotypes. This makes it a show worth watching, one that is sure to be elevated by Bones Film’s visuals.
