Production on The Batman: Part II is set to begin once its script is completed. As of now, the sequel is rumored to begin production in January 2026, with a current release date of October 1, 2027. It must be noted that the wait for the sequel has been long. The first film was released in March 2022, and the sequel is set to be released approximately 5 years later in 2027.

During the press tour of The Batman in February 2022, actor Robert Pattinson, with his co-star Zoë Kravitz, said that he was excited to see where Reeves' version of the Caped Crusader would go in The Batman: Part II. The British actor told Entertainment Weekly:

“You know you're always looking for the next challenging part and there's something about... I mean I grew up watching Batman movies and I've always been excited to see what the next iteration of it is. I've seen all the movies in the theaters and it just felt like you know when you're trying to find mountains to climb [laughs] I mean it's definitely like it's a... It's a pretty significant mountain to try to try and get... And I just had this strange feeling about it. I knew he [Matt Reeves] was gonna do something special and then when I finally read the script I am like oh yeah I totally I totally know how to do this.”

Now that the script is finally completed, it looks like Robert Pattinson has or will learn where Bruce Wayne goes in the sequel, which is scheduled to release in October 2027.

Why did The Batman sequel take so long?

The five-year gap between 2022's The Batman and Part II can be attributed to a single reason: The script for the movie took this long. It looks like on the surface level, James Gunn and Matt Reeves share a disdain for starting a project until the script is complete. Their way of working seems to mirror each other, with one significant difference: Their speed.

While Gunn could write in a supposed faster pace, Reeves wants a perfect script, which may have forced The Batman filmmaker to write and rewrite scenes as per his requirements. Reeves' slow pace is what frustrated many fans on the internet. James Gunn addressed fan frustration in a June 19 Entertainment Weekly interview:

“Listen, we’re supposed to get a script in June. I hope that happens. We feel really good about it. People should get off Matt’s n*ts because it’s like, let the guy write the screenplay in the amount of time he needs to write it.”

He added:

“That’s just the way it is. He doesn’t owe you something because you like his movie. I mean, you like his movie because of Matt. So let Matt do things the way he does.”

Matt Reeves finally submitted the script for the 2022 sequel on June 28 this year, and James Gunn has praised it. Other than Gunn, actor Jeffrey Wright, who has yet to read the script of The Batman: Part II, told Den of Geek in an interview that:

“I’m liking what I’m hearing. And I have huge respect for Matt’s Gotham-building skills. So I’m excited to jump in there and read what he has, which I’m sure will be rich and satisfying to play, and ideally for audiences to take in as well.”
