James Gunn clears the air on the recent rumors about The Batman 2. The latest film from Matt Reeves has been one of the most anticipated projects for fans of Robert Pattinson's Dark Knight. They have been eagerly waiting for Reeves to follow up his 2022 blockbuster with another feature film that can get Pattinson back in the batsuit.
After a long wait for Reeves's finished script, fans received a positive update this year, on June 27. Warner Bros. confirmed that Reeves has submitted the sequel's screenplay, paving the way for its filming to begin. In a recent shareholder letter, the company revealed that the film is all set to enter production in spring 2026.
Since this announcement, neither studio nor James Gunn has revealed any specific details about the plot. It didn't stop people speculating about what may be in store for the fans. One of them claimed that Robin will be a part of the new DC film. That's why Gunn took it upon himself to reveal the truth. On a Thread post, the Superman director said,
"Anything you've heard about that movie is made up or a guess. No one in the world knows anything about the concept for the story except four people."
A few days later, he added,
“Guys, please stop believing this nonsense. I think six of us have read the script. No one knows anything about The Batman 2.”
James Gunn slams the rumors about Matt Reeves' The Batman 2
Matt Reeves' 2022 film portrayed the orphaned-billionaire protagonist as a brooding vigilante fighting against the criminals in Gotham's underbelly. It felt less like a comic book adaptation and more like a gloomy neo-noir film where these anti-heroes largely served as a means to analyze the moral greys plaguing its society.
That's why fans couldn't believe that Reeves or James Gunn would want to bring his sidekick, Robin, into the mix, which can feel tonally different from the earlier film. Some fans were on board with it, while others didn't think it would be creatively satisfying.
Shortly after those rumors started making rounds on the internet, Gunn cleared the air on this issue, sharing factual details to get rid of the unnecessary speculations.

While DC or Warner Bros. haven't shared any plot details about Robert Pattinson-starrer The Batman 2, Gunn has revealed that it won't be a part of DCU's interconnected universe. Instead, it will be a separate franchise within the DC Studios, while DCU will have its own Batman.
It was an unfortunate update for fans who were hoping to see David Corenswet's Superman and Robert Pattinson as the Batman cross paths in a future project. However, there might never be a crossover film featuring both.
The only confirmed updates about DC's future include the plans to release the Supergirl film on June 26, 2026, written by Ana Nogueira and starring Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El. There's also a Clayface movie written by Hossein Amini and Mike Flanagan, expected to be released in 2026. Hopefully, we'll learn more details soon.
