James Gunn had glowing things to say about the completed The Batman: Part II script at a red carpet premiere of Superman. When a Deadline reporter asked Gunn about the script for Matt Reeves' The Batman, which was released back in 2022. James Gunn responded to the question with two simple words:
“It’s great”.
These two words have fans hopeful that The Batman: Part II might be as good as the 2022 movie. But, it must be noted that as of now, we don't know which characters will appear in it, except for the obvious ones like Bruce Wayne/Batman, Alfred, and Commissioner Jim Gordon.
What do James Gunn's comments for The Batman: Part II mean?
It probably means that the long wait between 2022's The Batman and The Batman: Part II might be worth it. While we knew that a sequel to The Batman was coming ever since its release in 2022, the script for the movie was written until now. It was on June 28, 2025, that Matt Reeves posted an image of himself and writer Mattson Tomlin with the completed script for The Batman: Part II.
Now, two weeks later, DC Studios co-CEO hinted that he has read the Part II script, as his verdict described it as great. This verdict has fans hyped up for the sequel, and it also pays off James Gunn's long-standing defence of Matt Reeves taking his time to complete the script for The Batman: Part II.
James Gunn defended Matt Reeves' writing processes in a June 2025 interview
Entertainment Weekly published an interview with Superman director and DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn on June 19, 2025. In that interview, Gunn answered questions about DC's future, including the long-awaited Matt Reeves sequel. When asked about Part II, Gunn said this first:
"Listen, we're supposed to get a script in June. I hope that happens. We feel really good about it. Matt's excited. I talk to Matt all the time. I'm totally excited about it. So we can't wait to read the scripts, but we haven't read it yet, if that's your question. People should get off Matt's n**s because it's like, let the guy write the screenplay in the amount of time he needs to write it. That's just the way it is. He doesn't owe you something because you like his movie. I mean, you like his movie because of Matt. So let Matt do things the way he does."
When the reporter expressed empathy for Reeves and couldn't imagine being in The Batman filmmaker's position, Gunn said:
"Well, I don't think Matt really pays attention to that stuff so much. He's got a lot of other things happening, so I don't think he lets it affect him. He's fine. But I am irritated by people. I mean, it's just that thing people don't need to be entitled about. It's going to come out when he feels good about the screenplay. And Matt's not going to give me the screenplay until he feels good about the screenplay."
Apart from the Entertainment Weekly interview, James Gunn has expressed support for Matt Reeves' writing process on both interviews and social media. This proves that DC Studios, under James Gunn and Peter Safran, is much more filmmaker-friendly.
