Superman filmmaker James Gunn just provided more details regarding the next DCU project that will feature David Corenswet's Man of Steel. During a recent Collider interview, Gunn was asked about when he would be resuming his role of directing projects. To this, Gunn responded that he would be resuming directorial duties soon.
It must be noted that Gunn, apart from directing, is also the co-CEO of DC Studios. Thus, fans are celebrating Gunn's return to the director's chair after The Last Son of Krypton's movie and Peacemaker Season 2. The filmmaker also revealed that the DCU project is currently being scheduled for filming. While he did not state which project it is, many believe that it is the project that will feature the Man of Steel.
What did Superman filmmaker James Gunn say?
James Gunn was interviewed by Collider's Senior Entertainment Reporter, Christina Radish, this week. Their conversation veered towards Gunn's next directorial venture. He revealed that he would be directing a new DCU project soon. Revealing that they are deciding the filming schedule of the untitled project, James Gunn said:
“We’re scheduling it now. I’m totally done with the treatment. My treatments are incredibly intense. They’re not regular treatments. They’re 60-page treatments with dialogue and everything. And so, now I’m just turning that into a script. We’re planning out when we’re going to shoot that. It’s going to be much sooner rather than later.”
In this Collider interview, the filmmaker did not specify which project DC Studios is currently deciding for the filming schedule. But, many believe that the said project is the same one Gunn spoke about in The Hollywood Reporter interview on Wednesday at the Peacemaker Season 2 premiere:
“I’ve already finished the treatment for the next story in what I’ll call the ‘Superman Saga.’ The treatment is done, which means a very, very worked-out treatment. I’m working on that and hopefully going into production on that not too far away from today.”
Thus, based on the two quotes from the two different online entertainment publications, we can ascertain that Gunn has finished a detailed treatment for the DCU project featuring Corenswet's Big Blue Boy Scout. As Gunn himself said, for now, he has completed a treatment, but not the script. But considering the treatment is detailed, turning it into a script could be faster.
What's next for the DCU?
While there is time for Supergirl is still a year away, the Wonder Woman and the Batman project, The Brave and The Bold, are still being written. However, the most acclaimed DCU project in the past few years, Peacemaker, will begin streaming its second season next week. James Gunn, teasing the HBO Max show's connection with the David Corenswet-headlined movie, said:
“It’s a big part, definitely Superman leads directly into Peacemaker; it should be noted that this is for adults, not for children, but Superman leads into this show and then we have the setting up of all of the rest of the DCU in this season of Peacemaker, it’s incredibly important,” Gunn said. “Lots of guest stars coming up, lots of characters that are showing up that we’ve already met in Superman. I don’t think there’s anything that I’ve ever done that I love more than this season of Peacemaker, so I’m so excited for people to see it.”
