Shawn Kemp former American professional basketballer who played for the Seattle SuperSonics, Portland Trail Blazers, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Orlando Magic, has been sentenced to 30 days in prison after pleading guilty to a 2023 parking lot shooting case.
The sentence was passed on late afternoon on Friday, August 22, 2025. The Pierce County judge sentenced Shawn Kemp to 30 days in jail, 12 months of community custody, and 240 hours of community service. However, the 55-year-old former professional athlete will serve his jail time at home.
“I cannot state strongly enough this could have been easily avoided by simply walking away. Property is replaceable, human life is not,” the judge told a stoic Shawn dressed in a navy suit jacket paired with tan pants, a white inner shirt, and a light blue tie.

On Wednesday, March 8, 2023, Shawn Kemp was arrested in connection with an alleged drive-by shooting incident that happened at the parking lot in Tacoma, Washington. The incident occurred between two cars, leading to shots being fired.
Shawn Kemp stated that he was only acting in self-defense and was trying to recover some of his stolen property, including a phone. At the time of the incident, the basketballer said he would fight the case in court as his actions were “reasonable and legally justified.”
After being formally charged by the prosecutors on April 14, 2023, Shawn pled not guilty before finally entering a guilty plea to the one count of first-degree assault. After his guilty plea, prosecutors pushed for a 9-month jail sentence.
While Shawn fired multiple shots at the victims, no one was injured. The judge acknowledged the athlete’s claim of acting in self-defense but chastised him for his violent actions.
After sentencing, Shawn shared that he was glad the ordeal was over.
“I recognize the mistake, and that’s a tough process to go through, but I’m definitely glad it’s over.”
