Actor Ryan Reynolds revealed that he wants Disney to make an R-rated version of Star Wars in a recent appearance on The Box Office podcast.

In the podcast, the actor expressed that he ponders upon the fact that why production houses put faith in ideas like this, as he mentions:

"I always wonder why studios don’t want to just gamble on something like that.”

Let us find out what more Ryan Reynolds talks about his idea of an R-rated version of Star Wars.

"I’m not saying I want to be in it," says Ryan Reynolds about the R-rated version of Star Wars

While speaking at The Box Office podcast, the actor talks about his vision where Star Wars could be made into an R-rated version. He mentions that he had proposed this idea to Walt Disney Studios, as he states:

“I pitched to Disney, I said, ‘Why don’t we do an R-rated Star Wars property?’”

Ryan Reynolds also mentions that he does not intend the Star Wars film to look obvious and crude to make it into an R-rated film, as he states:

“‘It doesn’t have to be overt, A+ characters. There’s a wide range of characters you could use. And I don’t mean R-rated to be vulgar. R-rated as a Trojan horse for emotion.”

In further statements, Ryan Reynolds dismisses the idea of him being cast in the project, as he feels he would not be apt for it. He mentions:

“I’m not saying I want to be in it, that would be a bad fit.”

Reynolds rather expresses interest in being a part of its production, be it in its writing or producing the project, as he mentions:

“I’d want to produce and write or be a part of behind the scenes. Those kinds of IP subsist really well on scarcity and surprise. We don’t get scarcity really with Star Wars because of Disney+, but you can certainly still surprise people.”

Ryan Reynolds' last release in 2024, the immensely successful Deadpool & Wolverine, was an R-rated film as well. He had also jointly written the film, along with helmer Shawn Levy, Paul Wernick, Rhett Reese, and Zeb Wells.

On the other hand, the Star Wars franchise has not been boxed into the category of R-rated till now. But, with the TV series Andor (2022-2025), the series has been on the lines of complex themes.

However, the franchise is coming up with a forthcoming release in 2026. It is the Jon Favreau-directed The Mandalorian and Grogu, with Pedro Pascal returning in his role of Din Djarin.

Meanwhile, Ryan Reynolds' upcoming releases include Peter Atencio's Animal Friends, which will release on October 10, 2025. He is also starring in Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley's forthcoming film Mayday.

As per The Hollywood Reporter, the actor is also currently involved in the writing of Boy Band, with Paramount Pictures supporting the project. The helmer of Deadpool & Wolverine, Shawn Levy, will be directing the comedy film.
