Analyzing Christian's actual motives in M3GAN 2.0

At the beginning of M3GAN 2.0, Christian, portrayed by actor Aristotle Athari, is established as a positive character who has a common ground with Gemma in terms of her belief system towards AI. However, the truth is more than what meets the eye. And it can be extremely disturbing at times!

Apart from painting himself as a harmless man, the plot also teased a potential romantic bond between Gemma and Christian. And that makes it even more disturbing when his facade melts and his counter-mask lurks takes over. It is revealed that Christian is the one who is responsible for all the chaos caused by AMELIA.

But what could be Christian's motive in M3GAN 2.0? Why would he carry out a series of killings in the hands of AMELIA? Well, it is revealed that the digital security expert Christian is the one who has asserted control over AMELIA to prove a point. The point is, he wishes to demonize AI as a threat to humanity, and further people's paranoia and suspicion towards AI.

Not only is Christian a scheming manipulator, but he is also showcasing hardcore misogyny. When Gemma does not comply with him and refuses to associate with him any further, he plots to gaslight Gemma to the point where her acumen itself gets changed. With the use of a chip, he desires to control Gemma's mind and even manipulate her into liking him.

He even probes Gemma to annihilate M3GAN, to which Gemma does not agree. That moment was a catalyst for the rebirth of Gemma's and M3GAN's complicated relationship.

This is undoubtedly problematic and deeply disturbing on so many levels. Christian is a man who wishes to assert control over humanity, and precisely, over women. Not only is he wishing to control Gemma, but he has been controlling AMELIA- a robot assuming the identity of a woman.

But interestingly, Christian's actions come back at him, causing his own destruction. Towards the end of M3GAN 2.0, in order to eradicate the menaces caused by AMELIA and the black box, he plans to demolish the foundation itself, but here comes the twist. Christian ends up getting killed by the hands of AMELIA.

In the film, the whole arc of Christian and his fate makes an imperative point that we must all remember and ponder upon. In the present times, when we are surrounded by discourse and debates regarding AI takeovers and their potential dangers, we must remember that it is, after all, humans who are the ultimate creators and enablers of this system.

AI has been intended to aid human lives and make our lives easier. The point that M3GAN 2.0 makes is that these programmes are created by humans, and it depends entirely on how humans exercise their sense of social responsibility and intention whilst using the powerful tool of AI.
