The Supergirl teaser repeats a Superman moment fans are over, but it still works - here’s why

The Supergirl teaser featured a moment that fans are familiar with: the destruction of Krypton. Krypton's destruction is a scene that has been adapted multiple times in both live-action and animation, like the death of the Waynes in several Batman stories. This is why many fans were hoping not to see the Man of Steel's origin story, tied to Krypton's destruction, in this year's Superman.

However, the teaser featured a scene of Krypton's destruction, but this time, the scene adds something new to this well-known scene.

How does the Supergirl teaser trailer differentiate itself from previous live-action movies on the big screen?

However, the moment in the teaser differentiates itself in not just one but two ways. Firstly, we see a portion of the Argo City covering itself with a protective shield from the surrounding rubble of the dying planet. This is something we have not seen in the previous movies featuring the Man of Steel. All we got was Kal-El's parents, Jor-El and Lara Lor-Van, sending their infant on the rocket to Earth.

Thus, until now, the movies have shown this event only from Kal-El's parents' perspective. However, this is the first time we are getting this event from Superman's cousin Kara Zor-El's perspective. CW's Supergirl already did that a decade ago in the opening scene of the pilot episode. But CW shows do not have the large reach that a big-screen movie has.

We also see Argo City forming a protective shield around the falling debris. In the Comics, Argo City is one of the cities that survived Krypton's end, but not for long. In the original Pre-Crisis continuity, debris penetrated Argo's protective shield, resulting in the floating city's destruction. However, newer continuity retconned Argo City's destruction in a darker way.

In the newer continuity, Argo's soil radiated into Kryptonite, poisoning the residents slowly. Kara is supposed to be the only survivor of this poisoning, and she is transported to Earth. It seems that the DCU's Girl of Steel project might stick to this interpretation of Argo City's end. Regardless of how it happens, one thing may be clear: Kara might be older than Clark, as in the comics.

But due to time dilation, he grew up on Earth while Kara aged slowly. The teaser confirms that Kara will turn 23 (21 in the Woman of Tomorrow comic) in the movie. Meanwhile, the DCU Clark Kent is in his mid to late 20s. This aspect has fans hyped up for the movie set to release in June 2026.

"When an unexpected and ruthless adversary strikes too close to home, Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, reluctantly joins forces with an unlikely companion on an epic, interstellar journey of vengeance and justice."

Apart from the upbeat teaser, the presence of a DCEU actor also has fans excited.

The teaser also features Jason Momoa's Lobo:

It has been known for a year that Jason Momoa, who played Aquaman in the defunct DCEU, joined Peter Safran and James Gunn's DCU. In this continuity, Momoa is playing the fan-favorite DC comics bounty hunter Lobo. Momoa's Lobo has been a popular fan casting for years before it finally happened in 2024. As of now, we don't know his role in the movie.

But his inclusion in the movie is not a surprise, as Woman of Tomorrow (the graphic novel the movie is adapting, Tom King confirmed in February 2023 that Lobo was supposed to be a secondary protagonist of the graphic novel as well. Tom King said this in the YouTuber wordballoon's interview:

“That book [Supergirl: WoT] began as me pitching a Lobo/Supergirl book, and it was my editor[s], Brittany Holzherr and Jamie Rich, who were like ‘No, take Lobo out and make Supergirl the Rooster Cogburn character’. And so it wouldn’t exist without Jamie and Brittany.”

For those who don't know, Rooster Cogburn is the protagonist of the novel True Grit. This is not surprising because the graphic novel is a pass at the classic novel that has been adapted multiple times.

Supergirl flies into the cinema halls on June 26, 2026.
