Fans of Lois Cerullo on General Hospital have been bracing themselves to see less of her since her portrayer, Rena Sofer, announced in 2024 that she would eventually be moving to the East Coast.
That move is now happening. Sofer posted on her Instagram on August 4 that she and her husband, Sanford Bookstaver, have officially left their Los Angeles home and will be driving to New York City this week to move there. Ironically, Lois Cerullo grew up in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Bensonhurst.
Rena Sofer has been back on General Hospital for two years

The post has a video of Sofer and her husband outside their Los Angeles home, talking about the move and singing a few lines of the Billy Joel classic “New York State of Mind.”
She captioned the post, in part, “We’ve been in LA for almost 35 years and now it’s time for me and @sbookstaver to go. No one better than Billy Joel to create the perfect soundtrack to our dreams! Yes I’m getting emotional. I met and had my children in LA met the man of my dreams and created an incredible life there. I had amazing success in the Biz and made all my lifelong friends who I will miss desperately.”
Laura Wright (Carly Spencer) commented on the post, “So so exciting!!!! Big love and safe travels!!!”
Numerous fans wished her well. The Instagram user jennifer.roma1 said, “I never heard anyone ever say they’re moving to NY for calmer times. Lol (G)ood luck w that! Hoping to run into you one of those calmer streets so I could welcome you! Lots of love, always to one of my faves! GH was so blessed to have (y)ou!”
The timing of Sofer’s move has coincided with Lois’s departure from the Quartermaine mansion on General Hospital. Lois is on the outs with her daughter Brook Lynn (Amanda Setton), after Brook Lynn learned that her mother has known all along that Gio Palmeiri (Giovanni Mazza) is the son she gave up for adoption as a teenager. And that not only has Lois known that secret for all of Gio’s life, but she invited him to live with the Qs and bond with Brook Lynn without telling them they were mother and son.
Lois’s best friend from Bensonhurst, Olivia Quartermaine (Lisa LoCicero), and Brook Lynn’s father Ned Quartermaine (Wally Kurth) are angry with Lois as well.
After leaving the Quartermaines, Lois recently tried to reconcile with Brook Lynn after a live taping in the Home & Heart studio, but it didn’t work, and Brook Lynn fired her from Deception.

That move ushers Lois off the General Hospital canvas, at least for now, but the door should be open for Lois to come back to Port Charles when her daughter and grandson are ready to forgive her.
Sofer played Lois from 1993 to 1996 on General Hospital, then returned to the role in 2023. She has had a long and productive acting career, starring on The Bold and the Beautiful as Quinn Fuller from 2013 to 2022. She has had regular roles on several series, such as Melrose Place and 24, and guest-starred on numerous shows, including a memorable appearance on Seinfeld.
Bookstaver is a director and producer. They were married from 2005 to 2017 before divorcing, then remarried in 2024. They have a daughter together, and Sofer has a daughter with Kurth when they were married in real life in the 1990s.
Ironically, Sofer also announced she will appear at a coffee and chocolate festival on September 27 in Rochester, New York, which is considered to be the real-life equivalent location of the General Hospital home city of Port Charles.
