The Last Ones Standing: General Hospital Two Scoops For the Week of September 22-26, 2025

No, Jason and Tracy are not the last two Quartermaines standing on General Hospital. Not by a long shot, as there is always another generation of Quartermaines ready to go. But Jason and Tracy are now the rocks of the family, something that would surprise Monica, while also putting the widest smile on her face because, in the end, she'd know everything would be okay.

GH outdid itself this week as Port Charles and legions of fans said goodbye to Monica Bard Quartermaine. This homerun was more like a grand slam during a week where the circle of life took center stage, so let's unpack it.

Jason Quartermorgan is finally, FINALLY here

If there was ever a soap story that needed to be told, it was the evolution of Stone Cold Anger Boy to the de facto head of the Quartermaine clan. Because soaps are a continuing story that takes us through entire lifetimes with decades upon decades of storytelling, many of us have taken Jason's journey with him. From preppy high school student and hopeful pre-med student to a lost soul without a past, expert hitman, dad, and finally, son, Jason has been through it all with Monica by his side.

When Jason moved back into Monica's house after Sam died late last year, it was everything we and she could have hoped for, but we didn't know there would be so much more. Jason finally looks like he belongs in that house and is not just a visitor. He looks like he is actually home, something he has searched for since 1996. Little did he know that home was always there, no matter how much he pretended it wasn't.

When Jason first left the Q house nearly 30 years ago to go live in a boxcar, he was practically a child, not just in age, but also in demeanor. That was a lifetime ago, and now Jason is an adult who has lived quite a life (and even a few deaths). He has made good and bad choices and has a world of regret. His biggest regret is rejecting his mother and breaking her heart. Although Jason and Monica mended fences years ago, there was still an awkward wall between them that Jason built all those years ago.

This week, Jason took his wall down in the most raw way. We have never seen Jason Morgan's eyes with so many years, but Jason Quartermorgan is definitely not afraid to cry and wear his emotions on his sleeve. It's just too bad he waited until Monica was gone to start calling her "Mom." But it was also true to life because sometimes we don't know how much someone means to us until they are gone.

Tracy Angelica Quartermaine lost her sister

And then there is Tracy. Our wonderful, not-so-sweet, but sometimes sweet, Tracy. Acerbic in wit, an expert at blackjack, and the new matriarch of the Quartermaine family. She lost her sister and best friend, and essentially her other half, this past week. Jane Elliot steals every scene she is in, even at the Metro Court pool, so between her and Jason, Monica's memorial was a heart stopper and a heart breaker.

Nice touch having Tracy drive off to an Atlantic City casino so she wouldn't have to say goodbye to Monica in front of other people. And it was an especially nice touch having Lois show up to detain her former mother-in-law while the cavalry (Brook Lynn and Ned) were on their way. Only our Tracy.

She was every bit a Quartermaine as she held her ears while Lucy banged on Monica's front door and later, promptly wheeled Drew out of the church and told him that his presence wasn't required nor desired.

Then came the staircase. Both Jason and Tracy had their moments. Tracy broke down sobbing on the steps, while Jason wept and told his mother that she never lost him and he would never lose her. We lost it both times because it was real (yet fake, cause it's a soap) and it was in Monica's house.

Understated and elegant

Some fans have wondered why more cast members were not in attendance at Monica's funeral, but something about this intimate gathering of veteran characters, interspersed with a few newer characters who made sense to be there (Stella as Tracy's new BFF and Portia as the woman who wears Monica's hat at the hospital now) was just right.

Laura was clearly a necessity, as her relationship with Monica goes back to her teenage years. In addition, Genie Francis and Leslie Charleson began their GH careers the same year in 1977, with Jane Elliot joining them both a year later.

The gathering back at Monica's house was perfect and didn't need a ton of people milling about. Close friends and family shared memories and stories with a toast to Monica at the end. Then, Tracy needed to get away from it all again and ended up at the crypt, where a new story arc will begin. Hello Viki! (Or rather, Veronica.)

Now, about Drew

Honestly, the only thing wrong at Monica's funeral was the inclusion of Drew's little scene and his insistence that Monica would have wanted him to be there. While she wouldn't have wanted him to be shot, which is why Tracy tried to keep her from finding out, she didn't want him anywhere on the Quartermaine grounds and certainly didn't want him to even have the Quartermaine name — and with good reason.

Watching Drew rattle on and rage about how nobody likes him, so he needs to seek revenge, was maddening. The lack of self-awareness is almost comical, as Drew just can't figure out why nobody likes him.

At least GH was wise enough not to include Carly and Sonny, two characters who made Monica's life a living hell for decades. The sanitizing of what they had done to Monica we've seen over the last few years has been nauseating, and maybe the show finally realized that. People don't just forgive you and invite you to parties in their home if you murdered their son in cold blood.

Let's talk about Gio

We weren't sure what to make of GH backburnering Gio and his parents right after the reveal that Dante and Lulu were his parents, but we now realize his journey back to the Quartermaine clan has been organic and slow for a reason. Rather than big, elaborate confrontations, Gio's gradual pull towards his family has been a beautiful thing to watch, even if we don't get to watch it often and with much fanfare.

It was Tracy who told Brook Lynn back in May to just give Gio what he needed — time and space to process life-altering news. Tracy was right, and she was rewarded for it in spades this week when Gio told her that watching the Qs come together for Monica made him proud to be her great-grandson. It was everything Tracy needed to hear and came in a small moment we will never forget.

No, that's not Nathan

And that brings us to the other major story this week. The apparent resurrection of Liesl Obrecht's children. While we have no doubt that Britt is indeed Britt, as we knew she was planning something elaborate before her Heather Webber hook attack, there is no way this 'John Doe' is Nathan West — at least not in his pure form.

At least Britt got an ill-conceived adventure story at a Croatian resort, complete with a bumbling junior super spy and a hitman hero. This guy gets Lulu happening upon a wreck, with the driver waking up the next day, thinking it was seven years ago. Things are never that simple on a soap. So, if the show "confirms" this is indeed Nathan within two days, then maybe we need to take a step back here and find out what's really going on before celebrating the return of Naxie while Maxie is still in a coma.

Portia, please...

At least we still got a good laugh this week as Portia was forever Portia, pouting and whining about Curtis having a drink with Jordan while she was naked in Isaiah's bed. And this was after being naked with Isaiah on her office couch, doing what naked people often do. Oh, Portia, will you ever learn? Clearly not, since the first thing she did after chewing out Curtis for no reason was run to Isaiah for more sex. Good job, Portia.

And finally...

If any week showed us one thing about which two characters should be together, it was this week. What are we doing here, GH? Jason and Elizabeth have known one another since 1999. They have been in love, shared the most intimate moments that people can share, have a child together whom they were once forced to grieve, and who are always, always there for one another when push comes to shove.

Steve Burton and Rebecca Herbst have undeniable, palpable chemistry and have for the last 26 years. And right now, both of them are technically single. Yes, GH is trying to do everything they can to put Jason with Britt, and while they do have chemistry, they are not Jason and Elizabeth, and never will be.

Liason has a built-in, passionate fan base and social media lights up like Times Square whenever they share scenes together. This week's two scenes were quintessential Liason. Quiet, intimate, and calm. There is always a sense of peace when they are together, and you see what could be, but what General Hospital refuses to let be. For 26 years. And all we have to ask is, why?
