Doja Cat finally released her fifth studio album, Vie, on September 26. Fans had been waiting for the Woman hitmaker since she dropped her last album, Scarlet, in September 2023. The lead single of her new album, Jealous Type, came out in August this year, which she also performed at the VMAs ceremony.
Doja Cat collaborated with SZA for one track in her 80s-inspired album. On its debut day, Vie reportedly gained more than 12.94 million streams. On September 27, when Pop Base shared the success statistics of the Planet Her singer, many internet users gave their reactions to it.
The reactions were mixed, and many netizens didn't seem impressed with the streaming numbers. A netizen even talked about the artist's retirement.
"Retirement Is Around The Corner"
Netizens divided over Doja Cat’s Vie first-day Spotify numbers
Although the new album of the Grammy-winning singer touched the mark of almost 13 million streams on Spotify on its first day, some netizens thought the numbers were lesser, given Doja Cat's fame. A netizen said that the album "tanked."
"Oh she tanked harder than expected"
Some on the internet compared Vie's streaming achievement with Cardi B's latest album, Am I The Drama?, which reportedly completed 14.68 million streams on its first day. A fan pointed it out and wrote,
"That’s it? AITD out streamed"
Doja Cat collaborated with SZA for Take Me Dancing. An internet user wondered about the streaming numbers, adding that more numbers were expected.
"This is very bad, and the song with sza? I thought I would make a lot of streams"
However, many on the internet appreciated Doja Cat's new album and congratulated her. A netizen suggested that this might be the beginning of a new for the singer.
"12.9M first day streams?? Doja really went from being “cancelled every other week” to pulling numbers that most artists can only dream of. Say what you want about her antics, but the music is connecting. The real question: is this her peak, or just the beginning of another massive era?"
Another X user said that people should not focus on chart numbers but rather enjoy their favorite music.
"Y'all need to stop revolving your lives around charts and just enjoy your favs music, my gosh. It's a good a*s album."
A netizen pointed out that the streaming data is decent, given Doja Cat did not promote her album much.
"Its good for a non promoting album, we didn’t see doja being outside n do meet n greet or selling abum with much discounts. She’s just being in her room n doin live and still get this streams. Iconic i would say."
More about Doja Cat's new album Vie
The pop artist dropped her fifth album via Kemosabe and RCA Records. To promote her album, the singer released Vie Hotline last month, through which fans could interact with an automated bot in Doja Cat’s voice. She unveiled the album cover on September 22, showing herself hanging from a yellow parachute caught in a tree. In her caption, she described the essence of the cover art as
"Falling in love is putting trust in the hands of yourself and others. The yellow parachute represents curiosity, happiness, and adventure. Flying you towards new experiences and scenes, taking a leap of faith, and holding no bounds. The tree represents life and wisdom. Giving you a sense of safety within its branches, but the pain from the fall teaches you that those scratches can be healed. You don’t have to hit the ground. Love grows upward but more importantly down. It’s the roots that keep you steady," the caption read.
Vie consist of 15 tracks, which are:
- CARDS
- JEALOUS TYPE
- AAAHH MEN!
- COUPLES THERAPY
