Billy Joel’s ex-wife, Elizabeth Weber is revisiting the story of their marriage, and why she never saw him as the villain in its beginnings.

In her exclusive chat with Us Weekly, she said:

“I never thought of Bill as the homewrecker.”

She explained that she needed to “tread carefully” because “Jon and I didn’t have a great romance.”

Elizabeth Weber, former music manager, was married to Joel’s friend and bandmate, Jon Small, when she met the future music legend.

Their affair, a focal point in HBO’s recent documentary Billy Joel: And So It Goes, was often credited with breaking up the band and taking a toll on Joel’s mental health. Weber said:

“The home was wrecked. We didn’t have a deep connection, Jon and I… So I really never thought of Bill as a homewrecker because there wasn’t much home to wreck.”

In the film, the "Piano Man" hitmaker also recalls his own perspective on the scandal.

“I was just in love with a woman, and I got punched in the nose, which I deserved."

After the fallout, Joel struggled with deep depression, attempting to take his own life twice. Small, despite the betrayal, took him to the hospital during one of those moments, ultimately saving him.

Small reflected in the documentary:

“He never really said anything to me. The only practical answer I can give as to why Billy took it so hard was because he loved me that much and… it killed him to hurt me that much. Eventually I forgave him.”

Billy Joel and Elizabeth Weber: A glimpse into their relationship

Billy Joel and Elizabeth Weber eventually reconnected and tied the knot in 1973, remaining together for nearly a decade before divorcing in 1982. He went on to marry Christie Binkley in 1985, which also ended in divorce in 1994.

In 2004, Joel married author Katie Lee. They divorced in 2009.

Throughout these marriages, Elizabeth Weber remained out of the spotlight. But in 2025, as she was involved in a high-profile marriage, she took part in her former spouse's documentary, Billy Joel: And So It Goes, to talk about her experiences.

In the two-part HBO doc, Elizabeth Weber described her marriage to Joel as unique.

“Bill and I became, like, an arc. We were unto ourselves with Sean… I’m kind of rock and roll, too… and I decided in those days that I wanted to live a certain life.”

Now, she says their relationship is cordial but not overly close.

“If I wanna talk to him or if I have something to say, I am able to contact him whenever I want to. But… he has a wife and he has children and, right now, he’s struggling with something that’s… a big thing.”
