Throughout his career as a musician, he has worked with other famous artists such as Bonnie Raitt, Steve Cropper, Taj Mahal, Mark Knopfler, and more. His journey as a musician began when he was just 8 years old, when he picked up his first guitar. By the age of 16, people in the music scene recognized his talents in the Bay Area.
When he first started playing publicly, he played alongside artists such as Jimi Hendrix, Steve Miller, Nick Lowe, The Soul Stirrers, Thelonious Monk, John Mayall, and more. He was also inspired by singers such as James Brown, Bobby Womack, Wilson Pickett, and others.
It was his friendship with Mike Bloomfield and his death that inspired Joe Louis Walker to pursue a degree in music and English. Later in 1985, after performing at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, he decided to go back to playing music. It was in the same year that he founded Bosstalkers and signed to a label called HighTone. The following year, he released his debut album called Cold Is The Night.
He moved from HighTone to Polygram, specifically their Verve/Gitanes record label. In 1993, Joe Walker began experimenting by mixing different influences, including gospel, jazz, soul, funk, and rock, but maintaining his blues core.

The "Bluesman" had this to say during an interview with Blue Blast magazine in 2016. He said:
"The blues is impeachable as music. The founding fathers of blues gave us a template that works not matter what color you are, what your sexual preference is, what country you are from. It has given a lot of people a life they never remotely expected."
