The One Chicago franchise's Chicago Fire returned to the television screens for its fourteenth season on Wednesday, October 1, 2025. The season 14 premiere sets up an emotionally charged season for all the characters involved. One of the most emotional storylines in this season is that of Stella Kidd and Kelly Severide, the TV couple affectionately dubbed "Stellaride".
The season 13 finale saw the popular fictional couple in a celebratory mood as Stella revealed that she was pregnant. However, there might be a ray of hope for the couple, as at the end of this Chicago Fire episode, they might have a chance at adoption.

What happens in the Chicago Fire Season 14 premiere?
The heart of the episode lies in Stella Kidd and Kelly Severide's subplot. The previous season saw the couple trying to adopt a child, culminating in the finale that saw Stella informing Kelly about them becoming parents as she is pregnant. However, the couple's happiness is short-lived as the doctor informs them that Stella has experienced a miscarriage, but they can keep trying to conceive again.
Stella tries her best to take things in her stride by returning to Firehouse 51, but things are still awkward for her. But the last few minutes of the episodes set their arc for this season as their adoption agency representative informs them about a teenager who is about to be removed from their group home. As Kelly and Stella were open to adopting teenagers as well, Terry came to them.
However, we don't hear what the couple said to Terry, and we'll probably learn in the second episode. Showrunner Andrea Newman even addressed Stella's miscarriage in a Deadline interview last week:
“What was so interesting about the dynamic was that Kidd had so many hesitations, questions, and issues about getting pregnant and starting a family. But when she found out she was pregnant, she told Severide about it, and the way he reacted in that moment had us all in tears. He was so happy and so joyous. And I think that just wiped away for that moment, all hesitation and all concern she had. But underneath, she was still struggling with the idea of it. So when the pregnancy didn’t last very long, there’s guilt on her part. There’s guilt because she wasn’t sure it was something she wanted, even though he wanted it so badly. It felt like that was a really interesting element to explore in their relationship. They’ve been through a lot together. This shifts things around, and very quickly. Now they’re headed into a kind of different paradigm of family than they thought they were going to be. You don’t plan for parenthood even though you think you can, because things never go the way you think they will.”
The season 14 premiere is currently accessible via streaming on Peacock. Catch it before the second episode releases next Wednesday.
