Kicking Down Doors, the Chicago Fire Season 14 premiere aired on October 1, 2025, at 09:00 PM ET. The thirteenth season finale, which aired in May 2025, ended on a hopeful note for the "Stellaride" (Stella Kidd and Kelly Severide ship name) fans. The popular decade-old TV couple took a major step in the season 13 finale as they decided to start a family.
The closing minutes of the season 13 finale even saw Stella delivering some happy news to Kelly: she is pregnant. This scene had every fan of the couple elated, as this was a new development for the fictional couple who have been together since the season 4 finale. However, Chicago Fire Season 14 Episode 1 shocked everyone with the revelation that Stella lost the baby.
Andrea Newman, who is also the showrunner of Chicago Fire, addressed this revelation in a Deadline interview last week:
“What was so interesting about the dynamic was that Kidd had so many hesitations, questions, and issues about getting pregnant and starting a family. But when she found out she was pregnant, she told Severide about it, and the way he reacted in that moment had us all in tears. He was so happy and so joyous. And I think that just wiped away for that moment, all hesitation and all concern she had. But underneath, she was still struggling with the idea of it. So when the pregnancy didn’t last very long, there’s guilt on her part. There’s guilt because she wasn’t sure it was something she wanted, even though he wanted it so badly. It felt like that was a really interesting element to explore in their relationship. They’ve been through a lot together. This shifts things around, and very quickly. Now they’re headed into a kind of different paradigm of family than they thought they were going to be. You don’t plan for parenthood even though you think you can, because things never go the way you think they will.”
What happens to the baby in the Chicago Fire Season 14 premiere?
It must be noted that the One Chicago franchise included not one but two baby-related plots on Wednesday. In the Chicago Med Season 11 premiere, viewers learn that Asher is pregnant. Conversely, the Chicago Fire had a more sombre plotline related to Stella's pregnancy. The doctor gave this heartbreaking news to both Stella and Kelly, but also told them that she can still conceive in the future.
Thus, the fourteenth season premiere sees the fallout from this revelation. Despite this devastating revelation, Stella tries to get her head back to work by resuming work at Firehouse 51. But there is a ray of hope in the closing minutes of the episode.
Chicago Fire's Kelly Severide and Stella Kidd could still be parents:
At the end of the episode, Terry, the couple's adoption representative, informs them about a teenager who is about to be removed from their group home. As the couple previously tried to adopt another teenager back in the previous season, Terry asks them if they are interested in adopting this teenager. Stella and Kelly look at each other, but we don't hear what they say.
Thus, viewers will learn what they told Terry in the next episode.
"After the emotional highs and jaw-dropping heartbreaks of Chicago Fire Season 13, viewers can expect some gripping drama in the series' next chapter. Some firefighters are starting families, some are making massive career moves, others are trying to find their footing at a new station amid squad shake-ups. Along the way, Season 14 promises adrenaline, heart, and more of the jaw-dropping rescues that have kept fans glued to their screens for over a decade."
The second episode of this season will air next Wednesday, October 8, 2025, on NBC.
