Dexter: Resurrection Episode 9 Touched by an Ángel, shocked viewers with its conclusion. Angel Batista, who has been a part of the Dexter franchise for twenty years, is shockingly murdered by Peter Dinklage's Leon Prater. This shocking death of a legacy character in the popular Showtime franchise has fans stunned and wondering what will happen next.

Ever since the episode aired, Detective Batista actor David Zayas has spoken with several entertainment outlets about his role, including an interview with The Hollywood Reporter’s contributing writer Josh Wigler. In that conversation, Zayas shared his hope of somehow returning to the Dexter franchise, despite his character’s death in Dexter: Resurrection Episode 9. While the actor’s enthusiasm is clear, it’s important to note that Batista’s death in Resurrection was portrayed as final. If the character were to reappear, it would most likely be in a non-literal form, perhaps as a vision or hallucination, similar to how Harry Morgan was featured throughout the original series.

What did Dexter: Resurrection's David Zayas say?

As mentioned earlier, actor David Zayas sat down for an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, in which the actor touched upon his character's fate in the ninth episode of Resurrection. When asked how he felt about bringing his character to a close with some iconic line, Zayas responded:

"That’s it, man. That’s A to Z right there. As we both know, though, you don’t have to be alive to be on this show. There are some characters who have never been alive on this show! So, I always have hope!"

The actor is probably hinting at James Remar's Harry Morgan, who has always been Dexter's hallucination in both the original series, starting from the third season. When The Hollywood Reporter interviewer humorously suggested a literal angel, the actor chimed in:

"Never say never. (Laughs.) I’m always open to new ideas."

Zayas explains Angel Batista's psychology in Dexter: Resurrection:

In the same interview, David Zayas spoke extensively about Angel Batista's state of mind in Dexter: Resurrection. Zayas believes that Batista's character shifted massively in Dexter: New Blood when he got a call informing him that Dexter was still alive. The actor's exact words were:

"If you remember the end of Dexter: New Blood, Angel gets the call saying Dexter is still alive, and he sees the picture. That’s when I felt Angel was on a mission. He was on a mission to corroborate the evidence and then bring Dexter to justice. I feel that Angel would not want to involve other people in his journey. He didn’t know where it was going to go, and he’s doing it after he’s retired from the police department. He’s not supposed to be doing this, but he does it anyway because of his strong moral code. I know he understands the danger and fear of this, but he’s past all that. He’s on a mission to seek — I never call it vengeance — to seek justice, but he’s going to still try and do it the right legal way. If I had any advice for Angel Batista, I probably would’ve said, “Don’t worry about the legal way. (Laughs.) Just figure out what you’re going to do!” But that’s not his character. He’s always been someone trying to do the right thing."

Then the Dexter: Resurrection actor continued:

"If there wasn’t that history between them, I think he’d probably say, “This isn’t my fight. I don’t want to get killed.” But there is that history and he knows deep inside that Dexter was fond of Angel. There was a moment in the original series when I get in trouble, Dexter gets me out of trouble and we have a coffee and he tells me, “If there’s anybody else I’d want to be like, it would be you.” I responded, “I don’t know what that means, but I appreciate it!” Well, now he knows what that means."

Furthermore, fans have been theorizing for a while that Batista was in danger ever since Resurrection started airing its episodes. This is devastating for a lot of fans, even if it was expected for a while.
