Dexter: Resurrection, the upcoming entry in the Dexter franchise, is set to feature the return of a familiar face: James Remar's Harry Morgan, the dead father of the titular character. The actor has been a part of this franchise since the first season of the original show that adapted author Jeff Lindsay's novel, Darkly Dreaming Dexter. After sitting out Dexter: New Blood, Remar returns to the hallucinatory role in Resurrection.

There is a catch to James Remar's return in Dexter: Resurrection. It has to do with the actor's age.

James Remar's age could be a distraction for Dexter: Resurrection

The first time we met Harry Morgan in this franchise was in the pilot episode of the original series, which aired in October 2006. In the first two seasons, Harry Morgan's storyline played out in the form of flashbacks, as the character died a long time before the events of the pilot. However, the makers changed the way Harry appeared in the show since Dexter Season 3.

They switched the flashbacks with Harry Morgan appearing to his son as a hallucination. The people involved in the series retained this storytelling device not just for Harry Morgan for the rest of the series, but also for Dexter's adoptive sister, Debra. She had died in the finale of the eighth season and returned in Dexter: New Blood in the role that Harry played in the original series.

However, now it seems that Harry Morgan has returned, and the actor who played him in the original series, James Remar, is playing him in Resurrection. Here is the problem, though: the actor is 71 years old, and his face shows his age. Moreover, the makers working on the series opted not to digitally de-age Remar to make him look like he did almost two decades ago in the original series.

This creates some continuity issues regarding Harry Morgan, because the original series confirmed that the Harry Morgan with whom Dexter interacted since the third season is his "dark passenger," or hallucination. Thus, Harry would appear to Dexter like he had last seen his father. However, the official trailer for Dexter: Resurrection shows us a glimpse of Harry, and he looks old.

This might take viewers off the series. However, an engaging storyline can overcome this one small problem.

The Dexter: Resurrection trailer hints at a Dexter who is willing to break Harry's Code

The one thing that separates Dexter from other serial killers is that he hunts down and kills only other murderers. The character does this because he follows a strict set of five rules referred to as Harry's Code. This code was given to Dexter by his father, who was a police officer. Here is Harry's Code:

  1. Don't Get Caught
  2. Never Kill an Innocent
  3. Targets Must Be Killers Who Evaded the Justice System
  4. Killing Must Serve a Purpose
  5. No Preemptive Killing

The Bay Harbor Butcher mostly stuck to this code. The trailer for Dexter: Resurrection, however, hints that Dexter has thrown caution to the wind and seems to rebuke even the hallucination of his father. Thus, it looks like Dexter might be more antagonistic in Resurrection.
