Based on E. Lockhart’s popular psychological novel, We Were Liars, narrates the story of the one summer vacation that left Cadence’s life full of questions and doubts. During a summer vacation in Sinclair's Beechwood Island, Cadence suffers a head injury, leaving her with amnesia. She tries to remember and ask around about what had caused the accident and how it happened, but no one, including ‘The Liars’, is willing to help her due to her mother's instructions.
Cadence is one of the grandchildren of the wealthy Sinclair family, who own the private Island that Cadence and her mother, and all the other family members gather around every summer. Here’s a look at all the characters of We Were Liars and their relationship with each other.
Characters of We Were Liars and their relationship to each other
1) Cadence Sinclair-Eastman
Cadence (Emily Alyn Lind) is the main character of We Were Liars and one of The Liars, whose story of remembering the unfortunate night we follow in the series. Harris and Tipper's oldest grandchild, Cadence, is the daughter of Penny, the middle child of the Sinclairs. Cadence is also in a complicated relationship with Gat Patil, her aunt’s longtime partner’s nephew.
2) Penny Sinclair
Penny (Caitlin FitzGerald) is Candence’s mother and the middle child of Harris and Tipper in We Were Liars. At the beginning of the series, we see Penny go through an unpleasant divorce with Candence’s father. She is also an emotionally distant mother who tries to keep up with public appearances.
3) Johnny Sinclair Dennis
Johnny is another of Cadence’s cousins and part of The Liars. He appears to be a character who does not care about anything much and tries to live without being very thoughtful. He is the eldest son of Carrie, the oldest daughter of the Sinclairs, and Harris and Tipper's grandchild.
4) Carrie Sinclair
Johnny’s mother and a recovering drug addict, Carrie (Mamie Gummer), is the Sincalr’s eldest daughter in We Were Liars. She has been in a relationship with Ed Patil, Gat’s uncle, for a long time. Apart from Johnny, Carrie has another son named Will.
5) Mirren Sinclair Sheffield
Mirren is another of the Liars in We Were Liars and a cousin of Johnny and Cadence. She is also the daughter of the youngest Sinclair daughter, Bess. She is known for her artistic talents, but still finds herself overlooked in the extended family.
6) Bess Sinclair
Mirren's mother, Bess, is one of the only ones still married among her sisters and a homemaker in We Were Liars. She is the youngest Sinclair daughter, and has a good impression on her parents. She is married to Brody Sheffield, who is described as a workaholic, causing him to miss the vacation.
She has two other children, Bonnie and Liberty, and tries to depict the perfect life she has been living, which also involves not using her trust fund, making her one of the favorites of her father among the three sisters.
7) Harris Sinclair
The Sinclair family is headed by Bess, Panny, and Carrie's father, Harris, in We Were Liars. The grandfather of three of the Liars and Tipper’s husband, Harris, is also the owner of Beechwood Island, where all of his daughters and their families come to spend their summer vacations.
8) Tipper Sinclair
Wife of Harris and the mother of the adult Sinclair sisters in We Were Liars, Tipper is described as a mother who loves all of her daughters and tries to help them out in any way. She is also fond of her grandchildren.
9) Gat Patil
Although not a blood relative of the Sinclairs, Gat has been joining them for the Beechwood Island vacations due to his uncle’s relationship with Carrie Sinclair, and is one of The Liars. He is also romantically involved with Cadence, the narrator of We Were Liars.
10) Ed Patil
Ed is Gat’s uncle and has been in a long-term relationship with Carrie, Johnny's mother.
