Head Over Heels ending explained: Bong-su returned in Seong-ah's body

The final episode of Head Over Heels opens with Bong-su, now inhabiting Seong-ah’s body, living together with Gyeon-u. As soon as the two arrive home, Ji-ho is stunned to see his best friend back. But before he can process anything, she suddenly kisses him and says, "It didn’t work."

She even calls Ji-ho "a massive pushover," a phrase only Bong-su ever used. That’s when it clicks for Ji-ho: the chaotic spirit has returned, just in a different body. From her clothes to her sass, she’s clearly not Seong-ah, adding a hilarious twist to the episode.

While the boys try to manage the spirit situation, Jin-ung returns from his military service. Gyeon-u attempts to hide Seong-ah from him but fails miserably. Without wasting a second, Jin-ung spreads the word that Seong-ah is back, and soon, the whole gang gathers to celebrate her return.

As they all sit together, Seong-ah (who’s actually Bong-su at the moment) starts to tear up. He realizes that it's Seong-ah who deserves this love and warmth and not him, but the poor spirit remains helpless.

Later in the Head Over Heels Episode 12, Gyeon-u apologizes to Bong-su for behaving rudely when he was teasing him. Bong-su then asks Gyeon-u for one final favor. He wants Gyeon-u to take Seong-ah’s place in death so she can live, and Bong-su can finally cross over for good.

Gyeon-u has always been there for Seong-ah, and when it came to saving her, how could he refuse to help? Bong-su lets him enter Seong-ah's dream, where he finally meets her and shares everything that has happened so far.

Gyeon-u mentions how everyone made it to graduation day and is now living their best lives. But when she asks if he’s been doing well too, Gyeon-u can’t bring himself to admit that he spent most of those years just searching for her.

After years of separation, Gyeon-u finally kisses Seong-ah, allowing Bong-su to reclaim his body. In doing so, Gyeon-u brings Seong-ah back, but she’s no longer a shaman.

After losing almost everything, Yeom-hwa returned to being a good shaman and knew that in order to save Seong-ah, she and Gyeon-u must die. This will also make Bong-su leave his body and end up in hell.

As the Head Over Heels episode continues, the ritual to drive out the evil deity begins, causing both Yeom-hwa and Bong-su to experience intense pain. Just before it started, Yeom-hwa had quietly transferred a large sum of money into the Flower Master and Auntie’s bank accounts.

Sensing something was off, the Flower Master grew suspicious and soon realized that Yeom-hwa might have gone ahead with a ritual that could end up killing her, too. Even though he knows they aren’t strong enough to stop the evil deity, the Flower Master keeps trying to open the door.

At one point in the Head Over Heels finale, it truly felt like a sad ending was coming. Seong-ah wakes up to find Yeom-hwa’s letter, which says that by the time she opens her eyes, everything, including Gyeon-u, will be gone.

She rushes to the shrine, begging the Fairy God to return to her and share the powers she had before. Overwhelmed and heartbroken, Seong-ah bows her head low in despair before the deity.

As Seong-ah breaks down in tears, she suddenly hears footsteps approaching. Lifting her head, she sees her beloved Spirit Mother standing before her, along with the deities who have now returned to the Heaven and Earth Fairy.

Using her powers, Seong-ah stops the exorcism and saves both Gyeon-u and Yeom-hwa. She then asks Bong-su to reveal his real name to help him, and thankfully, they learn that his name is Jang Yoon-bo.

The reason why he couldn't remember it was that he believed the boy whom he asked for help was a real person. But in reality, it was just Bong-su's hallucination that he believed, and he got stuck in the world as a spirit.

By the end of Head Over Heels, everyone is happy. Gyeon-u is now a part of the national archery team of the country, while Seong-ah is carrying out her duty of being a Fairy shaman.

She even helps the same man who appeared in the very first episode, the one Seong-ah couldn’t assist back then because she was rushing to her exam. Another fun moment in the finale is when Mo-beom develops a crush on a woman who looks strikingly similar to the water ghost that once terrified him.

So, Head Over Heels concluded with a tender kiss between Seong-ah and Gyeon-u, offering fans a heartwarming and satisfying ending.
