The opening scene of Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2 Episode 4, opens with a flashback focusing on young Annabeth. This is long before we meet her for the first time at Camp Half-Blood in season 1. This flashback also fleshes out the sibling bond between Luke and Annabeth. But the flashback also establishes one key character that plays a pivotal role in the entire series: Thalia.

We saw Thalia's tree in both seasons 1 and 2. The season 2 premiere even saw Luke poisoning the tree. For the uninitiated, Thalia Grace, the daughter of Zeus, perished in a battle with monsters close to the borders of Camp Half-Blood. As she was dying, however, Zeus turned her into a tree, which protects the camp from monsters. We see this play out in Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2 Episode 4.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2: Who is Thalia Grace?

Like Percy, Thalia is a child of "The Big Three", i.e., the offspring of Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades. She is dead by the time Percy is admitted to Camp Half-Blood in the first book, The Lightning Thief. However, that does not stop her from playing a role in the events of the series. Thalia played a major role in the third book, The Titan's Curse.

This is why her appearance in Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2, Episode 4 is short. But this short appearance does set up the necessary elements that are associated with Thalia's character. We see the signature shield Aegis that materializes on her arms. She, little Annabeth, and Luke form a sibling bond as they are on the run from monsters across the United States.

What makes Thalia such a beloved figure in the Percy Jackson lore is the moment when she sacrifices herself in a battle against the monsters close to Camp Half-Blood. But she was turned into a tree by Zeus out of pity and save her soul from going to the Underworld, Hades' realm. The fourth episode of Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2 retains this seminal moment.

Who plays Thalia in season 2?

British actress Tamara Smart plays Thalia in the second season, and she will reprise the role in the third season. Her version of Thalia has a British accent; therefore, the show's version of Thalia is of British ancestry. Smart herself confirmed it in the Entertainment Weekly interview in November. She did so while discussing the Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2 scene she filmed for the audition:

"The first two initial auditions were flashback scenes with Luke [Charlie Bushnell] and Annabeth [Leah Jeffries], and they are scenes from season 2, which was so amazing to film. It gave me the biggest sense of nostalgia. And also the first audition I did, I auditioned in an American accent, so that was also crazy to be then doing it in my British accent. The final audition I did with Walker was a scene from book three, that we may or may not have just shot. I'm very excited for people to see it."

Upon hearing that Smart auditioned in her British accent, the reporter asked if Thalia was British in the series. To this, the actress gave this answer:

"Yes, she's British. Lance is American, and obviously the gods and their children are usually quite similar. I initially auditioned in an American accent, and I remember by the second audition, I had asked, "Do you want me to do an American accent or a British accent?" And they were like, "Just do you," and so I did. It's very awesome to be representing the Brits on this show. In season 3, Thalia and Percy have this really interesting banter going on, and there's a lot of fun things that I get to say that just sounds so cutting in an English accent. So I'm really enjoying the banter that we're finding this season."

What did you think about Tamara Smart's turn as Thalia Grace in Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2 Episode 4?
