Peacemaker Season 2 is just a few hours away. As that happens, promotions for the upcoming season of the DCU HBO Max show are in full swing. One of these promotional activities is James Gunn and DP Sam McCurdy's appearance on Deadline’s Crew Call podcast. In that podcast, Gunn had interesting things to reveal about the upcoming season.

The most interesting thing James Gunn revealed about the upcoming season is that his initial ideas for Peacemaker Season 2 were different from what we are going to see play out over the next eight episodes. If Gunn is to be believed, the second season would've followed Chris dealing with the repercussions of killing his father in Peacemaker Season 1, Episode 7, "Stop Dragon My Heart Around".

What were James Gunn's initial plans for Peacemaker Season 2?

As mentioned earlier, James Gunn's initial plans for Peacemaker Season 2 would've seen Chris deal with the consequences of shooting his father. While Auggie died, a lot of his henchmen would've regrouped to avenge their leader's death. However, it must be noted that this idea is from 2022, before James Gunn and Peter Safran were hired to head DC Studios.

As he and DP Sam McCurdy discussed the upcoming second season, James Gunn described his initial idea as a "rough". Gunn's exact words were:

“The first time I wrote a rough outline of season 2, it had to do with other white supremacist superheroes who were after Peacemaker for killing his father because he was their comrade,” says Gunn, “For me, it played a little bit too much like season one and I wanted to turn the story on its heels.”

Describing his intentions for the second season of Peacemaker, James Gunn then went on to say this to McCurdy:

“I wanted Peacemaker to be this character who had to really deal with the ramifications of his actions in season one, and deal with his emotional reality of the demons that he discovered in season one and how does he face that. That seemed to work much better for that.”

James Gunn reveals the inspiration behind Peacemaker Season 2's multiversal plot:

We already know that the second season will be dealing with the multiverse. While the initial plan was different, Gunn unveiled the inspiration behind the multiversal plot for season 2: The Counterlife, a 1986 novel written by Philip Roth. The filmmaker's exact words were:

“Peacemaker sees this reality that’s like his, but better in seemingly every way, so how does he deal with that from an emotional standpoint and face the ghosts from his past that he loved and killed? It seemed potent especially when mixed with the love story."

It seems that all members of the 11th Street Kids are going through a rough phase (probably for exposing Amanda Waller in the season 1 finale). Chris, who possesses a Quantum Unfolding Chamber (QUC), opts to use it and escape to a universe in which his life is better. It is up to the rest of the 11th Street Kids to bring Chris back to where he belongs.
