The Walking Dead: Dead City is back with the second season, and it has already grabbed viewers' attention with Maggie (Lauren Cohen) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) put into opposing forces. However, this time, it wasn’t because of Maggie’s sheer hatred for Negan, but rather to save everyone else from her settlement, the Bricks.

It’s almost a decade since Negan brutally murdered Maggie’s husband, Glenn (Steven Yeun), in front of her and the whole group. Since then, she has held a deep resentment and hatred toward the former leader of the saviors, which we witnessed in the later seasons of The Walking Dead.

In the first season of The Walking Dead: Dead City, they were both reluctantly thrust together to find Maggie’s son, Hershel. After a whole season of displaying a reluctant but impeccable partnership, Maggie ultimately decided to betray Negan and trade him for her son, bringing her back into the same cycle of hatred toward Negan. This denies her character the deserved growth arc, which would make the story and her character take a new turn rather than relying on the revenge arc that has been going on for a while.

More on this in our story.

Why does Maggie need to finally let go of Glenn in The Walking Dead: Dead City? Reasons explored

Glenn’s death was one of the most horrifying scenes in the show, which is known for its bloody and gruesome deaths. Maggie’s hatred toward Negan stems from that event when Negan beat her husband to death with Lucille, right in front of her. After that, Maggie tried to take revenge on Negan multiple times, even leaving her friends, as she couldn’t accept the sight of Negan living and breathing.

In season 1 of The Walking Dead: Dead City, the hatred created tension between the two, but still they worked together to save Hershel and gave us a hopeful scenario where they both can work for the same cause, without liking each other, but without being friends either.

Maggie’s hate toward Negan is justified, but the question is how long she is going to make herself suffer for it when it’s apparent that Negan is not going to be far away from her now. In season 1, after working together, she betrayed Negan at the end, coming back to the same cycle of hatred, which has been ongoing since Season 7.

While Negan’s character has gone through one of the most compelling redemption arcs, Maggie’s character has been stuck hating her husband’s killer, especially in a show where repeated encounters are inevitable. The Walking Dead franchise is known for character-driven narratives in the post-apocalyptic world, where we have seen many new and contrasting characters come together. Negan’s story fits right into that narrative, while Maggie’s has become stagnant.

Moving on but not forgetting what happened to Glenn will only make Maggie’s character more appealing, as we will get to see the other traits of Maggie as a leader and a protector.

The Walking Dead: Dead City needs to bring more of Maggie’s qualities, rather than just being vengeful

The other two spinoffs, The Ones Who Live and Daryl Dixon, brought back two of the beloved duos together, but The Walking Dead: Dead City brought together two people who can’t look each other straight in the eyes.

However, it was great seeing Negan and Maggie work together. Nobody wants to see them become friends, but creating a relationship where they can at least trust each other would introduce the much-needed respite from the overused plot of hatred. It will allow Maggie to become something more, as we have seen in the original series.

The time she spent away from her family to learn from Georgie about building communities and sustaining life has not been properly used. Moving on from Glenn’s death will allow her to give up her sheer hatred for Negan, so that the story can move forward and introduce new narratives rather than recycling rivalries that are stagnating the story and characters.
