IT: Welcome to Derry Episode 8, "Winter Fire", is packed with several shocking revelations. A "plot twist" ties into the two IT movies Andy Muschietti directed, as one of the Welcome to Derry protagonists, Marge Truman, is Richie Tozier's mother. This connection was something many fans were theorizing since the beginning. For those who don't know, Richie Tozier is one of the seven members of the Losers' Club. The Losers manage to beat Pennywise not one but twice in the IT movies. The IT: Welcome to Derry episode also confirms that Pennywise wants to kill Marge because she will give birth to Richie Tozier, who would be one of the people who would kill him in the future.IT: Welcome to Derry showrunner isn't surprised that fans caught onto Marge's identity: View this post on Instagram Instagram PostThe Marge revelation arrives in the second half of the episode as Pennywise drags Marge over a frozen lake covered by fog. He taunts her with her future name, Margaret Tozier. Then he brings up the missing poster that he spooked Richie with in the 2017 movie. IT informs her that Richie would be one of the people who would kill it. He intends to kill her and prevent Richie's birth, changing the future.Fans theorized that she was Richie's mother after observing not only her glasses but also her sense of humor. One of IT: Welcome to Derry showrunners Jason Fuchs revealed that he wasn't surprised by the fan theories in a Collider interview published after the episode's release:"I was not surprised because IT fans and Stephen King fans are an incredibly literate, engaged fan base by definition. They’ve either read a thousand-plus page book, or they’ve watched a two- hour movie and a two-hour, 40-minute movie. These are people who are like I am, they deeply care about this stuff and are aware of it. So, I always imagined that a certain segment of the audience would be in the shoes of an IT super fan like myself and would be tracking that stuff. Audiences are smart. If you know the material and you know story geometry, you know that person has to live and that person has to die and that name is a little similar to that. Part of the fun is, if you are a hardcore fan like myself and like Brad, you did the math on that and figured it out. If you are someone who’s coming through this fresh and doesn’t have as much familiarity with the canon, then that was not on your radar and you experienced it in a different way."Why does Pennywise want to kill Marge? While the show doesn't go into detail, those who know the book will know that Bill, Beverley, Eddie, Stanley, Richie, Mike, and Ben are under Maturin the Turtle's protection. In the Stephen King Universe, Maturin is IT's mortal enemy and the good counterpart. This is why IT can not kill any of the losers as kids, even if it can haunt them.IT: Welcome to Derry finale confirms that Pennywise is trying to kill off the parents of the Losers to weaken them during their confrontation in 1989 and 2016. Fuchs addressed the way Pennywise sees time in the same Collider interview while being asked about IT: Welcome to Derry Season 2:"Without spoiling anything, I’m not sure that IT would understand the concept of going back in time in the way that you and I would understand it. We’re suggesting, in that moment when IT reveals the missing kids poster of Richie Tozier to Marge, that IT has a unique relationship with time and may not experience the flow of time in the way that we do. There’s a lot of mystery surrounding that intentionally, but I’m not sure that it’s a function of him going back in time. I’m not sure that IT yet understands the distinction between tomorrow, yesterday, past future, future, present. That’s all unclear. It was important to us that we introduce fresh mysteries in this season. We answer a lot of mysteries. We unravel a lot of them and provide explanations. It felt like we also owed the audience some fresh mysteries that hopefully feel equally intriguing. That’s certainly an intriguing one to us. If we’re lucky enough to continue to tell the story, we know what the answers to some of those mysteries might be. We, too, cannot travel forward or any direction in time, so we’ve got to just wait and see what happens and if we’re lucky enough to continue telling the story."While HBO hasn't greenlit IT: Welcome to Derry for a season 2, the reception should make renewal possible. But we may have to wait for a while before we hear more about the IT: Welcome to Derry Season 2.
