The hour-long IT: Welcome to Derry finale packed in several revelations that tie into the two IT movies, the last one released in 2019. The closing minutes also hint that the HBO series is intended to run for two more seasons. However, it should be noted that HBO has NOT greenlit IT: Welcome to Derry for two more seasons.

Moreover, the series also confirms that IT: Welcome to Derry might be a sequel series if it is renewed for two more seasons. But until then, the two IT movies and IT: Welcome to Derry Season 1 are all we have hinting at the Stephen King universe.

"As General Shaw pushes ahead with his mission, the HAnlons, Rose, Dick, and the kids realize it's up to them to save Derry."

IT: Welcome to Derry Episode 8 recap

Here are some of the major events in the hour-long IT: Welcome to Derry finale:

  • Pennywise attacks the school

After Will's abduction in the previous episode, the episode opens with Derry being surrounded by a mysterious fog. Then, Pennywise proceeds to the school and abducts the children after brutally killing the principal. He directs younger school kids to the gym in the principal's voice. After coming face-to-face with the demonic clown, the kids begin to float after seeing the deadlights.

Meanwhile, Pennywise taunts Leroy through the phone, and the latter rushes to Dick Hallorann's quarters and convinces him to help. After that, the two rush to Rose's home, where Charlotte and Hank are also there. Rose suggests that Dick use his powers to find the dagger, which he is a bit apprehensive about. But she gives him "Maturin's root", which shuts down the ghostly voices in Dick's head.

  • The Dagger's nature revealed

The previous IT: Welcome to Derry episodes revealed that the dagger Lilly holds is the meteorite that crashed on Earth with IT. Now, Rose further explains the reason behind Lilly's behavior in the sixth episode after finding the dagger. Like Sauron's ring in The Lord of the Rings, the dagger can "corrupt" the bearer.

Rose explains that the alien dagger wants to return home, which is why it may impact the one who holds it. We see this play out as Lilly, Ronnie, and Marge fight as the other two try to convince Lilly to let them hold the dagger. As that happens, Dick and the adults locate Ronnie, Lilly, and Marge.

Marge and Ronnie manage to convince Lilly to hand over the dagger and calm her down. As things seem normal, the dagger begins to glow, revealing Pennywise's proximity nearby. They walk on the frozen lake and are shocked to find their floating classmates hovering behind Pennywise's wagon. The three manage to find Will and try to break him out of the trance, but Pennywise sees them.

Meanwhile, Leroy and Taniel are given the task of burying the dagger inside a tree that will restore the pillars and put the demonic entity back to sleep.

  • Mage's future revealed

After toying with Ronnie, Lilly, and Marge, Pennywise drags the last one in an attempt to kill her. He specifically wants to kill her because she will become one of the Losers' mothers: Richie Tozier (Finn Wolfhard/Bill Hader). He calls her by her future name, Margaret Tozier, and reveals that her son would be his downfall. But he is frozen midway by Dick before he can eat Marge, letting her escape.

Pennywise being frozen also frees everyone in a trance, including Will, who joins his friends, and soon the adults join the kids. Soon, Taniel and Leroy set out on the mission to bury the dagger inside the tree. But the two fail as the soldiers led by Shaw soon arrive and shoot Taniel in the neck and Leroy in his leg.

  • It is up to the kids

As Leroy's leg is shot, he can't move anymore, and he gives the mission to Will. Initially apprehensive, Will, Ronnie, Marge, and Lilly set out to bury the dagger inside the Deadwood tree that will force Pennywise to go back to his slumber. Meanwhile, the military manages to subdue Dick, freeing Pennywise, and Shaw informs the clown that he is free.

However, Pennywise turns the tables on Shaw and eats him. As that happens, the dagger drags Will away from the tree, but the other three help Will steer towards the tree. But they are unable to bury the dagger, and that's when Richie's ghost helps them bury the dagger, forcing Pennywise to go back to sleep.

  • The set up

Marge's future is not the only setup in the IT: Welcome to Derry finale. Dick walks by when Leroy is packing up and informs him about getting an offer to work as a chef in a hotel (for the uninitiated, it is The Shining's The Overlook Hotel). Apart from that, we also learn why Mike Hanlon is finally in Derry in the 2017 IT movie. Leroy and Charlotte get an offer from Rose to be a part of the group.

The two take up the offer, meaning Charlotte and Will never leave Derry, setting up the mother and son's tragic fates in the town. Lilly and Marge also have a conversation in which the latter reveals to Lilly what Pennywise told her about her future son. Marge theorizes that Pennywise could probably travel further back in time.

Lilly is unfazed by this revelation, saying that if Marge were true, it is their ancestors' problem now. This scene sets up the probable IT: Welcome to Derry Seasons 2 and 3.

  • Ingrid Kersh

Ingrid is confined to her room in the post-credit scene as the guards calm her down by playing old-fashioned music. Then, the post-credit scene surprisingly cuts to nearly twenty years later, as the IT: Welcome to Derry finale cuts to October 1988 (around the time Pennywise killed Bill Denbrough's young brother Georgie). Ingrid hears loud cries.

She enters the room to see a man and a young girl mourning at the feet of a woman who committed s**c*de. This young girl is none other than young Beverly Marsh (Sophia Lillis reprising her role), setting up the events of 2017's IT.

IT: Welcome to Derry Season 1 is currently available on HBO Max.
