We suspected for a while that James Gunn worked on Peacemaker Season 2 and the upcoming Superman simultaneously. It should be noted that Superman began production on February 29, 2024, the Man of Steel's canonical birthday in DC Comics. Conversely, Peacemaker's second season also began its production nearly two months later on April 13, 2025.

Approximately a year later, on June 22, 2025, James Gunn posted an image on his Instagram that confirms that Gunn was working on Superman and Peacemaker Season 2 simultaneously. It must be noted that Gunn directed three episodes out of eight of the second season. The other five episodes were directed by Greg Mottola, Alethea Jones, and Peter Sollett.

Peacemaker Season 2 showrunner James Gunn's Instagram post explained:

James Gunn posted an image of himself, David Corenswet in his Superman costume, Rachel Brosnahan, Tim Meadows, and Steve Agee on the Superman set. In the caption, Gunn revealed that the soundstages for Superman and Peacemaker Season 2 were located close to each other, making it easy for the filmmaker and DC Studios co-CEO to frequently work on the two projects.

The caption on the post read:

"Some of my favorite days on set were when we had #Superman on one soundstage and #Peacemaker on another, and I could run back and forth between takes. It really felt like we were building a universe. This was a day when @real_timmeadows and @steveagee from @peacemaker visited the set."

Based on the caption above, we can confirm that James Gunn has been working continuously for years now. First, he worked on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 till its release in May 2023, then he probably began working for a while on the Superman script till the end of the year, then he began filming the movie, and just two months in, Gunn began the filming of Peacemaker Season 2 as well.

This busy schedule is something Gunn confirmed in the May 26, 2025, Entertainment Weekly interview.

What did James Gunn say about his busy schedule, including Superman and Peacemaker Season 2?

In May 2025, James Gunn and John Cena sat down for an interview with Entertainment Weekly to promote Peacemaker Season 2. In that interview, the conversation shifted to the long three-year wait for season 2. After taking the responsibility for the delay, Gunn said:

"Once I was done with Peacemaker, I had to do Guardians 3, and then when I was about ready to jump [back] into Peacemaker, I got hired to be the head of DC. As soon as I got that job, I made a couple of calls, and the first one was to [Marvel's] Kevin Feige telling him that I'm taking the [job as] head of DC. The second one was to John Cena, and I said, 'I'm getting this gig, and I still want to do Peacemaker, but it's going to have to wait. We're going to have to get Superman working first.'"

Laughing, the Peacemaker Season 2 showrunner continued that he had to:

"Get through this other little movie, this little side project first. As soon as I was done writing Superman, I was able to write season 2 of Peacemaker. I know it seems like a long time for other people, but for me it all seems awful short because there was so many things I did in between."

Peacemaker Season 2 will begin streaming on HBO Max on August 21, 2025, and before that, Superman is flying to the cinema halls across the world in two weeks on July 11, 2025.
