One of the absolute highlights in Stranger Things Season 5 Volume II is the scene in which Byers (Noah Schnapp) comes out to his family and friends. The emotional scene has been discussed more than any other scene from the second volume of season 5. Fans have been wondering for a while whether the character of Will might be a member of the queer community, and the show finally confirmed it this week.

The cast and crew of the Netflix series have several interviews to discuss the latest revelations. Some are also to promote the Stranger Things finale, releasing this coming week, on New Year's Eve. One of these was with Deadline, in which the reporter interviewed Schnapp and the Duffer Brothers.

According to Noah Schnapp, Stranger Things has been building towards Will's coming-out scene since season 1:

Stranger Things Season 5 Volume II shocked viewers by revealing a scene in which Will takes control of Vecna/Henry and instructs Max and Holly to run. This happens in the fifth episode. But soon, Will collapses as Vecna imprisons the former and uses him to locate Max in the real world. Vecana also reveals to Will that the latter has been his unwitting spy all along.

Vecna also shows Will a vision in which he turns the latter's secret on him. This is why Will decides to reveal his secret to his friends and family: he is gay. Most of them suspected this, and to Will's surprise, all of them love him regardless. Schnapp believes that the Netflix sci-fi series has been building towards this particular scene ever since the season 1 premiere back in 2016:

“It was so freeing. I mean, there’s been so much build up for this scene for so long. Since, I would argue, episode one of the first season. So getting to finally have that moment and just have that dialogue… Will is always speaking through so much of his facial expressions, but to actually verbalize his emotions and express them to everyone was so freeing to finally get to do.”

The actor further revealed that while Will accepted his sexuality earlier, he took some time to come to terms with the fact that Mike Wheeler saw him just as a friend:

“He accepts his own identity by the first volume, and that’s what allows him to unleash these powers. But then, like he says, it takes him through kind of Volume 2 to really understand that it was never about [Mike], it’s about himself. I mean, I think it was just really well done and really authentic to how the story unfolds. I know I could definitely relate to some of those feelings of being in love with a best friend who’s not in love with you. It feels [like a] realistic representation of being queer and growing up.”

Now that Will has revealed his secret, he is in a stronger position to fight Vecna in the Stranger Things Series finale next week.

What do we know about the series finale?

The Stranger Things series finale will stream on Netflix on New Year's Eve, ensuring a holiday treat for the fans. We also know that the upcoming finale will be two hours and eight minutes long. The closing minutes of the seventh episode even set the stage for the finale as the gang heads to the Upside Down to kill Vecna.

“The fall of 1987. Hawkins is scarred by the opening of the Rifts, and our heroes are united by a single goal: find and kill Vecna. But he has vanished — his whereabouts and plans unknown. Complicating their mission, the government has placed the town under military quarantine and intensified its hunt for Eleven, forcing her back into hiding. As the anniversary of Will’s disappearance approaches, so does a heavy, familiar dread. The final battle is looming — and with it, a darkness more powerful and more deadly than anything they’ve faced before. To end this nightmare, they’ll need everyone — the full party — standing together, one last time.”

As of seven episodes of Stranger Things Season 5, and the previous four seasons are available on Netflix.
