Hightown was removed from Starz last year after the conclusion of the third and final season, which aired on March 8, 2024. It seemed that fans couldn't legally watch the crime drama on any streaming platform. However, it now appears that this will not be the case, as it has been officially confirmed that the series will be made available to fans across the US on Netflix starting from July 23, 2025.
Hightown follows Monica Raymund's Jackie Quiñones, who is an agent at the National Marine Fisheries Service in Cape Cod. Created by Rebecca Cutter, the show, which begins as a simple murder mystery, slowly delves into the drug problems in Cape Cod. The synopsis for the first season reads:
"Jackie Quiñones, a hard-partying National Marine Fisheries Service agent, has her free-wheeling life thrown into disarray when she discovers a body on the beach – another casualty of Cape Cod’s opioid epidemic. To deal with the trauma, Jackie takes the first steps toward sobriety — until she becomes convinced it’s up to her to solve the murder."
One of the most appealing aspects of the series is the locations where it was shot. As Hightown is a story set in Massachusetts' Provincetown, it would make sense that the portions of the series were shot there. But there's a catch, though.
The team of Hightown recreated Provincetown at different locations:
As mentioned before, the production team of the crime drama shot the series outside Provincetown by recreating the scenic coastal town in these locations:
- Provincetown, Massachusetts
As the plot of Hightown is primarily set in Provincetown, it makes sense for the makers to shoot some portion of the series in the coastal town. The team filmed some scenes here between the fourth week of May and early June 2019. The team shot a carnival parade scene there. Actress Monica Raymund recalled her experience in Provincetown in a January 2024 CBS Boston interview:
“It was my first time going to Provincetown, Massachusetts. This was like an introduction to Massachusetts. My most memorable moment is visiting P-Town. This party vibe, the carnival that happens at Provincetown. That was the first time for, so I loved getting to know P-Town and being in that part of the world.”
- Freeport, New York
As mentioned before, only a small portion of the first season was filmed in Provincetown. For the rest of the series, Freeport doubled as Provincetown for the makers of season 1. The team began filming the series in Freeport in May 2019, and it continued there till June 2019. Some of the Freeport locations, like Church Street, Cafe on Guy Lombardo Avenue, Johnson's Place, and Bagel Dock, appeared in the first season.
But the production team did not return to Freeport to film seasons 2 and 3. Instead, they used:
- Wilmington, North Carolina
Wilmington doubled up as Provincetown for Hightown Seasons 2 and 3. The second season, which was filmed between November 2020 and April 2021, had the team shoot in Wilmington locations such as the Carolina Beach Town Hall building, St. Mary Catholic School, Wrightsville Beach, Hanover Seaside Club, and Oceanic at the Crystal Pier.
As the team returned to Wilmington for season 3 between May and July 2022, it used The Rusty Nail dive bar, Rose’s Ice on Market Street, the Carolinian Inn on Market Street, the Harry Forden 6th Street Bridge, St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, and the former Legacy Lounge on Carolina Beach Road.
How to watch the series?
As mentioned before, Hightown was taken off Starz after the finale of the third and final season released in 2024. Despite the critical acclaim, a lot of fans were shocked at the unavailability of the series. But now, it seems all three seasons of the series are available on Netflix across the US.
Hightown is currently streaming in its entirety on Netflix.
