Now we know one of the new characters in Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2, thanks to Rick Riordan. The cast and crew of the popular series, including its co-creator and the books' author, Rick Riordan, sat down for an interview with Entertainment Weekly on July 24, 2025. If the author is to be believed, actor Daniel Diemer's character will play an important role in the upcoming season.
In the interview, the cast and crew discussed what we can expect from the upcoming season, which is going to be released in December. But it is Riordan's comments regarding Diemer's Tyson in Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2 that have fans excited. That's because Tyson is a fan-favorite character who is linked to Percy in a major way.
What did Rick Riordan say about Tyson's significance in Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2?
Rick Riordan, in the Entertainment Weekly interview, revealed what we can expect from Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2. There, the author revealed that fans can look forward to playing a significant role in the upcoming second season. The author's exact words were:
"He's such a big part of the story in season 2. Daniel Diemer, who plays Tyson, the Cyclops half-brother of Percy, he's just so, so perfect. I don't know that I had a visual image for what Tyson would look like in the season, but now, it's definitely Daniel Diemer because he embodies the character. He's got this fantastic mix of sweetness and vulnerability, but he's also this really big guy, and you can see that he's got a lot of strength. He makes you fall in love with Tyson."
For the uninitiated, Tyson is a cyclops who is also the son of Poseidon, much like Percy. He is introduced as one of Percy's new classmates in his new school, but an attack reveals that Tyson is a cyclops, a monster from the Greek legends. Percy is supportive of Tyson, while Annabeth is skeptical of him because of her history with another cyclops in the past.
But as the book that Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2 adapts progresses, she learns to trust Tyson, introducing some nuance to the condition of Cyclopses in the Percy Jackson Universe. Daniel Diemer, who was also present in the interview, revealed to everyone that he was a fan of the books:
"I grew up with it. As soon as I came off a movie I did a few years ago, I started having a bunch of meetings with Disney about some possible projects, and the first thing that I asked about was, 'I heard Percy's in the running. I'd love to get in there [to audition] for Percy.' They were like, 'No, we're casting 13-year-olds.' So to then get Tyson was amazing."
Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2 actor Daniel Diemer described Tyson like this:
"He's kind of like this fostered Great Dane puppy. It's like his feet are too big, his limbs are too long. He's tripping over himself, but he's just been taken in off the streets and he's so excited to be part of what he hopes is going to be his forever family. There's this hope there, but also there's this history, and so there's a lot of trauma there that he needs to work through. Luckily he's got the greatest big brother in the world to work through that with."
The second season will begin streaming on December 10, 2025, on Disney+. In case you forgot, catch the entire first season on the same OTT platform.
