The Punisher special is currently filming in New York, giving fans numerous leaked images revealing characters set to appear in it. One of the latest images seemingly confirms that Jason R. Moore's Curtis, one of the Netflix show's main characters of the Netfflix series is indeed returning in the special. This means that we can hope to see his character appear in the possible series headlined by Frank Castle.

In the leaked set image, we see Curtis walking with a discreet, hooded, and bearded Frank Castle/The Punisher appearing out of a subway. It looks like Castle has gone underground after escaping Fisk's imprisonment in the post-credit scene of the Daredevil: Born Again Season 1 finale.

Exploring the fan theory behind the latest The Punisher special image:

As mentioned above, we see Frank come out of the subway station in New York in this image. Considering The Punisher special is set after the events of the Born Again Season 1 finale. This means that Wilson Fisk's oppressive curfew and mask ban are still in effect in this special. This explains Castle's hoodie and beard to avoid detection.

To do something, Castle needs all the help he requires and turns to his confidant, Curtis Hoyle, played by Jason R. Moore. Curtis has been around since the very beginning of Netflix's The Punisher, and his return would indicate to the fans that other Netflix Marvel shows might be canonized soon.

What is the special about?

As of now, we don't have any plot details of the Disney+ special. What we know is that the special is set after Frank's escape in the Daredevil: Born Again Season 1 finale. Thus, it feels like the solo will follow a Frank Castle who attempts to bring down Fisk's mayoral administration. Apart from now, we know who is writing the project, by director Reinaldo Marcus Green and Jon Bernthal.

The special marks Bernthal's debut as a writer

One of the most exciting prospects about the upcoming Disney+ special is that the special is going to be Jon Bernthal's writing debut. He will be sharing the writing credit for the special along with Reinaldo Marcus Green, who is directing the special. When Collider asked the actor about the special at CinemaCon this year, he replied:

“I've said it a million times: Frank is in my bones, is in my heart. I care about him."

Bernthal then further continued:

"In discussing what this thing could be and this sort of version of Frank that I really felt that the audience was hungry for, that the military community was hungry for it, the first responder community, the comic book fans, they were really hungry for it. I presented that version to them, and they encouraged me. They encouraged me to keep coming to the table. As we were talking with different writers, the ideas that we were coming up with started to resonate, and I think they saw how much they resonated with me. I got a great group of vets that I work with. One in particular, my friend Nick, he's just been incredible. I hope that it goes alright. I don't like talking about these things because it's a little bit of bark before there's a bite, you know? I'm honored and I'm grateful. It's an incredible group of people that we're assembling."

The Punisher special, for now, is set to release sometime in 2026. As of now, we don't know if the special is going to release before Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, or after it.
