Brief Character History
Joey was the late-in-life son of Ruth and Joe Martin. He was always a good kid, trying to keep up with his older brother Tad. Joey fell in love with Emily Ann Sago, the daughter of Bennie and Donna Sago. Joey married her against his family's wishes. When Emily Ann found out that her real parents were Billy Clyde Tuggle and Estelle LaTour, a pimp and a hooker, she became mentally unstable. After losing her baby and unable to accept the loss, she was committed to a mental hospital. Joey left Pine Valley, divorced Emily Ann and went to Stanford University for pre-med and medical school.
Joey was only referred to in phone calls and letters and an occasional visit until recently, when he returned to Pine Valley after dropping out of medical school and changed his name to Jake. While working his way back to Pine Valley as a handy man at various country inns, Jake met and romanced Liza Colby (each not recognizing the other due to his long absence from Pine Valley). Once Liza realized Jake was Tad's little brother, Joey, she broke off their affair and married Adam Chandler. Adam Chandler, ever the rat, wants out of the marriage (he married Liza to make Brooke jealous -- this failed). Adam hired Jake as a production assistant at WRCW, hoping to catch his wife "in flagrante" so that he can divorce her AND keep his money. Jake had the hots for Liza, but being the good boy that he is, refused to commit adultery and turned his eyes towards Belinda Keefer.
Jake and Belinda never hit it off and Jake started working at Pine Valley Hospital. He came across a new, attractive doctor named Allie Doyle. Although Jake and Allie never let their feelings loose, they knew what they both wanted. It wasn't until the day of the relay run for the children's ward, where Jake and Allie showed there desire to be with one another. Everything was going smooth until Dr. David Hayward came to Pine Valley to give a lecture on cardiac care. He was really in town to look up his old girlfriend, Allie Doyle. David asked Allie to marry him, but Allie declined his offer. David threatened to blackmail Allie by telling Joe Martin that she faked her college transcripts. Allie got fed up with it and David turned his sights to ruining Jake Martin's career. David injected Adam Chandler with a lethal drug while Adam was recuperating from a stroke. The drug he gave him made Adam's heart beat faster and nearly killed him. David blamed Jake for this after David ran in to save Adam's life. Jake was then put on suspension from his duties at Pine Valley Hospital.
When Liza decided that she wanted to have a child via artificial insemination, Jake offered his services. Liza agreed to Jake's offer, but Jake verbally agreed that he would not have any role in the child's life. That promise quickly became moot when Liza got back together with Adam. Jake feared that his child would be brought up under Adam's tyrannical reign and he decided that he wanted to sue for custody of his child. What Jake didn't know was that Adam had swapped his sperm sample with Jake's at the fertility clinic --- so Liza's child was actually Adam's and not Jake's!
Gillian and Ryan were involved in a car accident after Gillian learned that Jake was not Colby's biological father. As a result of her injuries, Gillian was left unable to speak. Jake stood by her side and helped nurse her back to health. As a result, Gillian was unable to tell Jake the truth that she'd learned. Gillian and Jake were later married, but when Jake learned the truth about Colby --- and that Gillian knew the truth and kept it from him --- he went on a rampage. Jake left Pine Valley and during this time Gillian and Ryan found their way back to each other. Gillian anxiously awaited Jake's return to Pine Valley so that she could tell him that she wanted a divorce. What she did not count on was Jake being injured while trying to rescue dozens of orphans in war-torn Chechnya. Gillian didn't want to hit Jake up for a divorce while he wasn't in tip-top shape… and Ryan slowly started to drift away as Gillian devoted most of her time to Jake. Finally, in October 2000, Ryan told Gillian that their relationship was over.
Gillian and Jake were married, but it was soon clear that Gillian's heart still belonged to Ryan. The crushing blow came when Gillian learned that Jake was not the father of Liza's child. The two were eventually divorced, though they would remain on good terms.
Over the next few months and years, Jake's life took unusual twists. He became involved romantically with bad girl Greenlee Smythe. Professionally, Jake turned to finding a way to take down David Hayward, a man who he saw as a driving force behind many problems that plagued his family. Jake's relationship with Greenlee started off platonically, but soon there were signs of more than just friendship. Greenlee, however, was still haunted by a past love - Leo du Pres. Jake then caught the eye of another young woman in town - Mia Saunders. Their romance fizzled when Jake became re-interested in Greenlee. Still very much interested in his work, Jake tried to take down David Hayward when he learned that David had used unapproved medical treatment to cure Dixie's heart condition. Dixie and Tad spoke up in favor of David and pleaded with Jake not to turn David over to the board. Jake did manage to stick it to David, though. David revealed to the hospital board evidence that showed that Joe was becoming a liability to the hospital. Joe was forced to resign but it was Jake, not David, that was named the new Chief of Staff at the hospital.
Jake and Mia reunited, but Mia was secretly being blackmailed by Trey Kenyon, who had helped her give her son up for adoption some years earlier. After Mia confessed this painful secret to Jake, he aided her in her mission to successfully persuade the father, Frank Hubbard, to not disrupt the boy's happy family life with his adoptive parents. Soon after this, Liza accidentally pushed Mia off a balcony at the Chandler mansion, leaving her near-death. Jake was adamant that Liza pay for her crime, but when Mia woke up, she refused to press charges. Jake and Mia were closer than ever while she recovered from her injuries, but in January 2003 she agreed to join Liza, Greenlee, Simone Torres and Kendall Hart in founding FUSION cosmetics. She worked many long hours with handsome, cultured men. Around this time Jake proposed marriage, but Mia told him she was not at a place in her life where she wanted to rush into marriage. Her words unleashed deep insecurities in Jake and he began sleeping with nubile young intern Allison, even having sex with her on his desk at the hospital. After Simone caught them in a broom closet during the grand opening party for FUSION, Jake could no longer live with his guilt. Too cowardly to break Mia's heart in person, he fled his family, job, and home, leaving letters for Mia and Tad explaining his reasons and apologizing to her for his idiotic mistakes. The family eventually received word that Jake had returned to the Doctors Without Borders program.
Four months after fleeing town, Jake returned for a visit. He called Mia and asked if they could talk over dinner. Mia misread his signals and raced over to the Martin home, running into Jake...and his brand-new fiancée, Carolyn. He had met fellow doctor Carolyn while in Kenya for the Borders program. She wanted a marriage and children, so he proposed. Although Jake wished Mia well, he also put most of the blame for their breakup on her shoulders and claimed she drove him to have an affair. Devastated once again, Mia ran out of the house. Tad chewed his brother out and begged him not to put another woman through the wringer, but Jake insisted he was doing the right thing. Ruth and Joe were happy for him and hoped he would stay, but Jake was convinced all of the old ghosts tracking him around Pine Valley would do his new relationship great harm. He and Carolyn said their goodbyes and returned to Kenya that very night, after promising to invite Ruth and Joe to their wedding.
In spring 2008, the residents of Pine Valley learned that Jake was being held hostage in Darfur. Zach Slater sent Aidan Devane to the Sudan in an effort to bring Jake home safely. Jake was returned home safely, but he expressed a desire to return to Africa, where his help was needed. Tad was able to talk his younger brother into sticking around.
Jake found himself enamored with Amanda Dillon, but their physical relationship never quite blossomed into anything more. While working at Pine Valley Hospital, Jake became invested in the recovery of Iraq War veteran Taylor Thompson. Taylor had suffered serious injuries and ended up paralyzed after a tumbled down the hospital staircase. Jake and Taylor grew close until the love of Taylor's life, Brot Monroe, was was presumed dead during fighting in Iraq, was revealed to be very much alive.
Jake and Amanda ended back in each other's company when Amanda became pregnant -- with David Hayward's child. Jake developed true feelings for Amanda and vowed to help protect her baby from David's clutches. The pair married on June 11, 2009
