Original GL Radio Cast Member Dead at 87

by Dan J Kroll

Actress Mercedes McCambridge, who portrayed Mary Ruthledge on the radio version of The Guiding Light in the late 1930s, has died. She was 87.

According to Cathy Ruppert, the assistant to the trustee of McCambridge's estate, McCambridge died from natural causes on March 2nd.

In addition to her radio work, McCambridge is best known for her Oscar winning role in the 1949 film "All the King's Men." In 1956, she earned a second Academy Award nomination for the film "Giant." McCambridge earned a cult figure status in recent years due to her work in a wildly successful film - a film in which audiences never saw her face. McCambridge supplied the raspy voice-over for Linda Blair's possessed girl in "The Exorcist."
