Emmy THE 37TH ANNUAL DAYTIME EMMY AWARDS
Emmy pre-screening nominations announced

The pre-nominations for this year's Daytime Emmys have now been announced. From this list will come this year's nominees and, eventually, the winners. In a rule rollback, shows may now have up to two nominees in any given category.

While the future of a televised Daytime Emmy ceremony remains uncertain, the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) isn't letting questions linger over whether or not they'll be giving out awards. As long as there is daytime television, NATAS will be handing out Daytime Emmys.

The pre-nominating process underwent a few tweaks this year. Seven years ago, NATAS changed the way that Emmy nominees were chosen in order to prevent shows with larger casts from allocation their votes in a way that more of their shows performers from landing on the final Emmy ballot. Until last year, each soap held an in-house vote to select their pre-nominees. In essence, the top cast-selected vote getters in each of the acting categories were then placed into the Emmy pool from which nominees were chosen. This year, the pre-nomination process was opened up to all of the soaps. Each actor decided if they ultimately wanted to be up for Emmy consideration. Their name was then placed on a ballot showing their eligibility, a ballot that was then voted on by all eligible Emmy voters industry-wide. From those eligible names -- pre-pre-nominees, if you will -- the two performers in each category with the most voters were then named as the pre-nominees. In some cases there were ties and three names made the final cut.

Each pre-nominee now must choose one episode that best displays their work from the 2009 calendar year. Those reels will then be judged to determine the final Emmy nominees -- and the winners.

The nominees for the year's Daytime Emmys will be announced on May 12. The Daytime Emmy ceremony will be held at the Las Vegas Hilton in Las Vegas, Nevada on July 27. The telecast will air on CBS.
