With the news of head writer Tom Langan's dismissal from Days of our Lives just a matter of days old and the rumored disagreement over whether or not the show focused too much on teen storylines comes news that one of the show's young stars,
Kyle Brandon Lowder (
Brady Black), is this year's big winner in the DAYS edition of the Soap Central Awards.
Lowder pulled in five nominations, including nominations in the Outstanding Supporting Actor, Outstanding Younger Performer, Favorite Character for Brady Black and Most Attractive Male Performer. The final nomination came in the Outstanding Overall Performer field. All Lead and Supporting Actor and Actress nominees are automatically placed into the Overall Performer category.
Among the women, there was no clear-cut frontrunner.
Kirsten Storms (Belle Black) picked up a whopping six nominations, with nods in the Outstanding Supporting Actress, Younger Performer, Most Attractive Female Performer and Favorite and Least Favorite Character categories. She, like Lowder, also earned the automatic Overall Performer nomination. Storms was the big winner in last year's voting, having been named Outstanding Overall Performer.
Other multiple nominees include
Kristian Alfonso (
Hope Brady). Alfonso, a winner in the Most Attractive Female Performer, Favorite Character and Outstanding Lead Actress categories, also received nominations in those categories this year.
The big male winner from last year, Peter Reckell (
Bo Brady) was also present on this year's ballot. Reckell earned nods in the Outstanding Lead Actor category and Most Attractive Male Performer.
In the storyline areas of the ballot, again the teen storylines featured prominently. The teens adventures in Puerto Rico landed in both the Favorite and Least Favorite Storyline categories. The placement in both categories was a common theme among all soaps' balloting this year; nearly every soap had a storyline that earned cheers and jeers on the final Dankies ballot. Also receiving mixed votes from viewers was The Baby Switch storyline.
The on-screen almost-coupling of Jack and Jennifer also drew fans' attention. Matthew Ashford (
Jack Deveraux) earned a nod in the Leading Actor category and Melissa Reeves (
Jennifer Horton) earned one in the Lead Actress category. Both performers received enough votes to make the Outstanding Newcomer category, however, both were disqualified since they had previously appeared on DAYS in their current roles. Similarly, Kyle Brandon Lowder had also received enough votes to be placed on the final ballot, but Lowder debuted in 1999 - well before the cutoff dates for qualification for this category. In their place went nods to Robert Benevenisti (Kevin Lambert), Tamara Clatterbuck (Barb Reiber), Jennifer Gee (Susan Adamson) and Justin Melvy (Colin Murphy).
