A few days ago, Tom Holland's spidey suit in Spider-Man: Brand New Day was revealed in a video. From the video, it is inferred that the costume was created by merging both the designs of the suits worn by actors Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield when they embodied the superhero.

The Spidey suit is stuck in the popular imagination of Spider-Man and has a huge pop culture significance. But there lies a surprising fact. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this archetypal suit worn by Tom Holland in Spider-Man: Brand New Day has been significantly featured within a span of very low screen time.

Analyzing Tom Holland's costume in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and beyond

The suit worn by Tom Holland in Spider-Man: Brand New Day honors the legacy of the previous actors who portrayed the superhero: Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. This is reflected in the costume design, as it carries visual references from both of the costumes donned by these actors.

The costume of Spider-Man has undergone significant changes over time in its story. But the popular imagination of Spider-Man, concerning its design and color scheme, stayed. Whenever we witness a design encompassing a web, a spider, with dollops of red and blue, bam! We immediately recognize it as Spider-Man's costume.

The first appearance of the superhero (and this celebrated costume) came into existence on Earth in the comics of Stan Lee and Steve Ditko's 'Amazing Fantasy #15' in August 1962.

In films, when Tobey Maguire acted as the superhero in Sam Raimi's films (2002, 2004, 2007), the traditional costume did not undergo many changes. But in Spider-Man 3, we see a completely different version of the costume. Maguire's Peter Parker, after the interaction with the alien, sees his costume turning completely black. It is known as a Symbiote Suit.

However, when Andrew Garfield starred in the role of Spider-Man in Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014), some changes were witnessed in the traditional costume.

The costume had more blue hues than red, and this time, the Spidey hero donned yellow lenses. The intent behind constructing this particular costume of Garfield was also to look more gymnastic. Some alterations were made to the web shooters as well. This costume has received a polarized response from the audience.

Cut to Tom Holland's entry into the MCU as Spider-Man; a total of eight outfit changes took place when the actor portrayed the superhero. In his first film as the superhero, Captain America: Civil War (2016), we see Tony Stark's high-tech intervention and maneuvering of the costume of Holland's Spider-Man.

In Avengers: Infinity War, push came to shove, and Spider-Man briefly wore the Iron Spider costume at a moment of life-threatening crisis. Lastly, in the last released film of the franchise, Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021), we see more versions of Spidey's costume, such as the red and black one, the black and gold one, and the mighty Iron Spider Suit.

In Spider-Man: No Way Home, we see three Spider-Men coming together wearing their own traditional suits. But in total, in all the Marvel films, this prototypical costume has not been seen many times.

So this time in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, when Tom Holland dons this legendary costume, it holds a larger purpose and an emotional meaning. This time, he gains complete autonomy and asserts himself as a full-fledged, self-reliant superhero. There is a sense of individualism and proliferation in his character that is reflected in his costume.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is set to release next year, on 31st July 2026.
