Željko Ivanek's early life


Željko Ivanek was born in Ljubljana, PR Slovenia, FPR Yugoslavia, to the family of Ferdo Ivanek, originally from Varaždin, Croatia. Along with his mother and younger brother Ivan, Željko moved to Palo Alto, California, in 1960. At the time, his father was working at Stanford University as a research assistant in the Department of Electrical Engineering. His mother was also a project manager at Stanford University.


Ivanek and his family returned to Palo Alto in 1967 after spending five years in Slovenia in 1962. Ivanek graduated from Palo Alto's Ellwood P. Cubberley High School in 1975 after participating in several community theatre productions in the San Francisco Bay Area. He majored in drama and graduated from Yale University in 1978. Later, he studied at the London Academy of Dramatic Art and Music.
