The Hollywood Reporter broke the news about DC Crime, the new DCU series with Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault's involvement. While the THR report did not reveal the title, subsequent entertainment outlets like Deadline and Variety revealed the title to be "DC Crime". It was further revealed that this Superman spin-off series would be a true-crime docuseries headlined by Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen.

The focus of the docuseries would be on Gorilla Grodd, a superintelligent telepathic gorilla who is a popular supervillain from the DC Comics lore. The news of this series is not surprising, as the WSJ published a report stating that James Gunn was considering a Superman spin-off series, headlined by Mr. Terrific and Jimmy Olsen.

As of now, Mr. Terrific's role has not been confirmed for DC crime, but we may hear more in the coming months. Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda are attached to showrun, write, and executive produce DC crime. Few details are available about the series, but it will mark Gorilla Grodd's second appearance in the DCU after his non-speaking cameo appearance in Creature Commandos Season 1, Episode 4, "Chasing Squirrels".

Gorilla Grodd's appearance in Creature Commandos explained:

Creature Commandos, Episode 4, mainly focused on Weasel's backstory. However, one of the pivotal scenes in the episode was between Amanda Waller and Circe as the latter shows the former an apocalyptic vision of the future.

This vision saw Princess Ilana Rostovic invading the world as she murders the common folk and heroes of the DC Universe in the future. One of the prominent members of Rostovic's army is Gorilla Grodd, who is an iconic villain of the Scarlet Speedster, The Flash. DC crime would be the first time we would hear the actor playing Grodd, and learn more about this version of the telepathic gorilla.

But his inclusion in the Jimmy Olsen-focused docuseries symbolizes that it will further expand James Gunn and Peter Safran's DCU.

What's next for the DCU apart from the upcoming docuseries?

The DCU officially kicked off with Creature Commandos last year in December 2024. After that, the DCU has continued to grow with two more projects: one movie and one HBO Max series. Both Superman and Peacemaker Season 2 were released this year, with the latter concluding its eight-episode run a month ago on October 9, 2025.

The Peacemaker Season 2 finale saw Christopher Smith being stranded on the alien planet "Salvation", which has been confirmed to be a setup for the overall DCU. Fans may return to Salvation in the HBO DCU series, Lanterns, which adapts the Green Lantern comics for the second time after the infamous 2011 movie.

The series is expected to be released in early 2026, after a brief rumor about a delay. However, WBD CEO David Zaslav confirmed an early 2026 release in a letter to the shareholders:

"Importantly, with its first theatrical release Superman, DC Studios marked a new era and critical first step on its 10-year journey to deliver fans a fresh and cohesive storyline across film and television, while bringing new heroes and villains to the surface. Building on Superman’s foundation, upcoming DC Studios projects include Lanterns, which will debut on HBO Max in early 2026; Supergirl and Clayface, which are scheduled for theatrical release in summer and fall 2026, respectively; and Man of Tomorrow, the follow-up to Superman, which James Gunn is currently writing and will again direct. We remain incredibly excited about the momentum at DC Studios and its prospects to re-connect with fans and ignite the next generation of these beloved characters."

Please remember that the DC crime is in its early stages of development. James Gunn has been clear that a DCU project will not be greenlit until the script is up to a certain level of quality. Therefore, we have to wait for a few months to learn more about this series.
