If dying and coming back were an Olympic sport, then Sam and Dean Winchester from Supernatural could easily give tough competition to Michael Phelps. That's because in the hit TV series, dying is not a tragedy but a minor inconvenience, like getting stuck in traffic.

And the show is quite creative when it comes to choosing the killer. The brothers have died at the hands of scary demons, angry gods, rogue reapers, or simply by chance. They have died more than your smartphone battery. For over 15 seasons, Supernatural has been a cocktail of monsters, mythologies, emotional trauma, and bromance.

And throughout this rollercoaster ride, Sam and Dean have checked out of this world countless times. They must know St. Peter on a first-name basis by now. The fun part about their deaths was that they would be resurrected as quickly as they died. A time loop or a deus ex angel would always pop up to save the day (or life).

How many times did Sam and Dean die in Supernatural?

Have you ever wondered how many times Sam and Dean died in Supernatural? If you have ever asked yourself this question, today you will get the answer. From heartbreaking to absurd, here is a full list of their deaths.

Dean Winchester: Death Count (100+)

Dean Winchester holds the record for the most deaths, not just on Supernatural, but overall on-screen. Thanks to one episode, which you will read about below.

1) Mystery Spot (Season 3, Episode 11)

The Trickster traps Sam in a time loop in which Dean dies every single day from every possible reason, electrocution, car crash, getting shot, poisoned twice, mauled by a dog, slipping in the shower, ax, and even by a damn taco. He died 100 times over in this episode and was like a Final Destination final boss. Sam watching his brother die over 100 times was both tragic and hilarious.

2) No Rest for the Wicked (Season 3, Episode 16)

Dean makes a deal with the Crossroads Demon, Lillith, and when it's due, he is horrifically ripped apart by the Hellhounds and given a chilling and brutal death. He is later resurrected by Castiel on God's orders because God had more work for Dean on Earth, and also because the series had to go on.

3) In My Time of Dying (Season 2, Episode 1)

Dean gets critically injured after a car crash and is rushed to the hospital. There, he goes into a coma, and his spirit walks around the hospital. He is technically dead in this episode. John Winchester later sacrifices his soul to bring Dean back.

4) Dark Side of the Moon (Season 5, Episode 16)

In this Supernatural episode, Dean and Sam are killed by hunters because they are angry at the brothers for stopping the apocalypse. Imagine how hard life was for them that they were happy with the world ending. Anyway, the Winchesters wake up in heaven with Dean digging into a cheeseburger, and enjoying the Impala and fireworks.

5) Appointment in Samarra (Season 6, Episode 11)

Dean voluntarily "dies" for a few minutes to have a chat with death, and is revived after having a creepy experience with the Reapers. And that is not even the crazy part; it is the fact that Dean realizes that he is Death's new BFF.

6) Red Sky at Morning (Season 3, Episode 6)

In this Supernatural episode, Dean has a terrifying premonition about dying after drowning, which is one of his worst fears. He doesn't completely die, but it still counts because he almost had a run-in with his old friend, death, again.

7) Do You Believe in Miracles? (Season 9, Episode 23)

Dean gets fatally stabbed in the heart with an angel blade and signs out immediately, but he is soon resurrected by the Mark of Cain. The twist in the tale is that Dean gets a 'deadly' makeover as he is resurrected as a demon.

8) Brother's Keeper (Season 10, Episode 23)

This is a very confusing death because you can't tell if Dean died or did Death died. Dean asks Death to kill him so that the Mark of Cain doesn't get corrupted. Death obliges and tries to kill Dean, only for him to pull an uno reverse on Death and kill it instead. How can someone kill death?

9) All Along the Watchtower (Season 12, Episode 23)

By this time, everyone is just sick of the brothers resurrecting all the time, so Lucifer himself decides to take matters into his own hands. He kills Dean during a showdown, but an alternate universe loophole brings everyone back again.

10) Carry On (Season 15, Episode 20)

Spoiler Alert! Finally, Dean dies for real in this episode. In the series finale of Supernatural, during a vampire hunt, he is impaled on a piece of rebar. Even after watching him die countless times during the show, watching him die here hits harder than ever.

Sam may not have the ultimate death count as Dean, but he had his fair share of run-ins with the reaper in Supernatural. Here is the full list.

1) Mystery Spot (Season 3, Episode 11)

In this episode, although it is Dean who is Death's favorite, Sam also finds himself face to face with the grim reaper when things go off-script in the time loop. He gets shot by the Trickster, and it is then that he realizes that what is happening is not a game.

2) All Hell Breaks Loose, Part 1 (Season 2, Episode 21)

Jake stabs Sam in the back, leaving him dying in Dean's arms. To bring him back, Dean sells his soul, a decision he would greatly regret in the following episodes.

3) I Know What You Did Last Summer (Season 4, Episode 9)

Sam faces the worst case of withdrawal when he is detoxing from demon blood. His body shuts down, and he technically dies for some time, but eventually comes back to life.

4) Dark Side of the Moon (Season 5, Episode 16)

In this Supernatural episode, just like Dean, Sam dies and goes to Heaven, and enjoys his time celebrating Thanksgiving with dogs and flying kites.

5) The Song Remains the Same (Season 5, Episode 13)

Sam gets killed by Michael in a vision, and traumatizes everyone. He doesn't actually die in this episode as it is simply a vision and not reality, but since it's Supernatural, every possibility is counted.

6) Swan Song (Season 5, Episode 22)

Sam decides to chill in Lucifer's cage for a bit. It's not a traditional death, but isn't that where he would have gone eventually? Since he disappeared from Earth, he is presumed dead by everyone. The weird part is that he comes back soulless.

7) The Man Who Knew Too Much (Season 6, Episode 22)

Sam doesn't die physically, but his mind is fractured, and one version of him dies internally. It is the only time when being dead inside is counted.

8) Sacrifice (Season 8, Episode 23)

When Sam tries to close the Gates of Hell, he can't keep up with the trials and starts dying. Dean swoops in just in time to save his baby brother, but till then, he is already 99% cooked.

9) Alpha and Omega (Season 11, Episode 23)

Sam dies while stopping the Darkness. The death is vague and is immediately reversed.

If there is one thing that Supernatural has taught fans, it is that death is not the end; it is the start of a new storyline. For the Winchester Brothers, death is just a minor inconvenience in their daily routine, which is fixed as simply as someone changing a light bulb.

The only takeaway from Supernatural is not their ultimate death count flex but the number of times they bounced back. So, whenever you come face to face with death, make sure to have a brother who will sell his soul to bring you back.
