Ernie Hudson's confession might make you smile at the Reagan family in Massachusetts if the Boston Blue pilot didn't already! The renowned actor who plays Reverend Edwin Peters in the CBS spinoff Blue Bloods has decided which original character he would most like to see reprise his role, and it's none other than the iconic Tom Selleck's character, Frank Reagan!

In an interview with Us Weekly, Hudson told us:

"I’d love to work with Tom. I never have."

He went on to say that he has always respected Selleck's ethics and seriousness. Fans of Blue Bloods share this feeling as it's hard to imagine the Reagans being stressed out without Frank at the dinner table, right?

Boston Blue's debut (on October 17, 2025) was a huge success. Rotten Tomatoes gave it a perfect score, proof that Danny Reagan, played by Donnie Wahlberg, still has it in him...just in a different ZIP code! The first episode (titled Faith and Family) pinned fans down as it drove the franchise forward.

Will Frank Reagan be on Boston Blue?

Selleck hasn't shown up (yet), but his footprint is visible. Yes, we hoped for a cameo, but in the premiere, Danny calls his father after his son Sean (Mika Amonsen) ends up in the hospital. Hudson says that is unlikely to happen in the first season. But, the possibility of a second season (and a Frank Reagan comeback) is high due to the rave reviews and the fans' energy.

Plus, a calm, quiet Frank advising his rebellious son Danny over chowder instead of steak on Boston Blue? Make it happen, CBS!

Hudson gets settled into his new role as Reverend Peters, as the moral guide of the huge Silver family, in the meanwhile. As of now, he brings together the new faces in a cohesive way. We are talking about people like rookie Jonah Silver (Marcus Scribner), Boston PD Superintendent Sarah Silver (Maggie Lawson), DA Mae Silver (Gloria Reuben), and Detective Lena Silver (Sonequa Martin-Green).

This structure gives Danny's Boston chapter more detail.

What made Boston Blue a hit?

It's not a procedural clone, to begin with.

Boston Blue features a new city, a religion-based spirit, and more women in positions of power, unlike Blue Bloods which focused on legal matters and dinners in New York City. Wahlberg's move from detective to co-executive producer becomes another point of reference.

According to critics, Hudson's casting gives the spinoff its own pace. What if Frank Reagan decides to stop by? Prepare for legendary numbers and enough fond memories to keep CBS Fridays alive for ten more years!

CBS airs new episodes of this show every Friday at 10:00 PM ET/PT. On the next day, Paramount+ gives streaming access to the episodes.
