The Rumor from last week was true. Peacemaker Season 2, Episode 1 does open with a long recap that shows events from the first season. Turns out, the Butterfly invasion from season 1 is canonical; however, there is one thing that's no longer canon to the DCU. The appearance of the DCEU Justice League is no longer canonical. Instead, it is the Justice Gang.
If you don't remember, the Peacemaker Season 1 finale, It's Cow or Never, streamed on February 17, 2022, featured a Justice League cameo in its last act. Ezra Miller and Jason Momoa even share an exchange in the episode. However, this is no longer canon; instead, the Justice Gang, consisting of Superman, Supergirl, Green Lantern, and Hawkgirl, appears in this Peacemaker Season 2 scene.
Instead of Aquaman, we see Green Lantern and Hawkgirl's faces instead of Aquaman and The Flash.
Peacemaker Season 2's Justice League retcon explained:
As mentioned earlier, last week, it was rumored that Peacemaker Season 2 would open with a recap that would retcon the Justice League cameo, and that rumor turned out to be true. In the recap, we can see that as Christopher and the other 11th Street Kids are walking out of the ranch as they encounter the Justice Gang. If Gunn wanted, he could also chalk that up to Ezra Miller's Flash absence due to his presence in a different reality.
James Gunn, who is the DC Studios Co-CEO and even the Peacemaker Season 2 showrunner, told TheWrap:
“Basically, what you saw last season was all accurate. But maybe there are a couple of things that are not so accurate and one of those is there’s no Justice League, obviously.”
Furthermore, the recap also excludes an important season 1 character, Chukwudi Iwuji's Clemson Murn. For those who don't remember, Clemson Murn, who leads the team for Project Butterfly, is a secret butterfly named Ik Nobe Lok who wants to help humans. He dies in the seventh episode of the first season.
However, Gunn recently revealed that Iwuji could return to the DCU if he wanted because, while the character of Ik Nobe Lok is canon to the DCU, his face might not necessarily be canon. He said that during the rewatch podcast episode in which Chukwudi Iwuji was also a guest. He said:
"I think Clemson Murn is canon. Maybe his face might not be canon if we want to cast [Chukwudi Iwuji] as something else in the DCU. But also, Chuk could end up being some other character maybe that isn't so humanoid."
Gunn had also previously stated that most of season 1 is canon, except for the Justice League cameo:
In an IGN interview in November 2024, James Gunn was asked about the DCU canon. At that time, it must be noted that time, both Superman and Peacemaker Season 2 weren't out yet, and people constantly asked Gunn about the DCEU Justice League's cameo in the season 1 finale. This was brought up again in the interview. This is when James Gunn said this:
“The truth is almost all of Peacemaker is canon with the exception of Justice League… which we will kind of deal with in the next season of Peacemaker.”
The Ties That Grind, the first episode of the second season, is currently streaming on HBO Max.
