Domingo was born into a working-class family in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he was raised as the third of four children by his mother, Edith Bowles, and her husband. His stepfather, Clarence, made a living sanding floors, while his mother worked at a bank and took care of the house. The day after Domingo's audition for the stage musical Passing Strange in 2006, Edith passed away. A few months earlier, his stepfather had passed away. He was educated at Overbrook High School and Temple University.


He is well-known for his roles in movies such as "Rustin," "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom," "If Beale Street Could Talk," "Selma," and "Zola." He has also appeared in television shows like "Law & Order," "The Big Gay Sketch Show," "Fear the Walking Dead," and "Euphoria." The Broadway musicals "Passing Strange" and "The Scottsboro Boys."


Colman Domingo’s career


In the late 1990s, Domingo made his television debut in a series of cameos on the police procedural series "Nash Bridges." He appeared on "Law & Order" television series in the 2000s and was a frequent cast member of the sketch comedy show "The Big Gay Sketch Show." Early in 2015, Domingo played Victor Strand in "Fear the Walking Dead," a spinoff of the post-apocalyptic horror series "The Walking Dead." This was his longest-running role to date. In addition to directing a few episodes, he continued to appear on the show until its conclusion in 2023.


Domingo also appeared on many other television programs, such as the teen drama "Euphoria" and the medical period drama "The Knick." He was nominated for an Emmy for his recurring performance on "Euphoria," as recovering heroin user Ali.

Domingo debuted in a motion picture in 1995 with "Timepiece." He also starred in films such as "Around the Fire," "King of the Bingo Game," and "True Crime." Domingo also made an appearance in "Desi's Looking for a New Girl,” and "Kung Phooey!"


During the 2000s, Domingo appeared in "Freedomland" (2006) and "Miracle at St. Anna" (2008). His work increased significantly in the 2010s, beginning with roles in Spike Lee's "Red Hook Summer" and Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln." He also starred in four movies in 2013: "All is Bright," "42," "Hair Brained," and "The Butler."


The next year, he played Ralph Abernathy, a civil rights activist, in Ava DuVernay's historical film "Selma." In 2016, Domingo appeared in "The Birth of a Nation," a historical drama directed by Nate Parker. Two years later, he starred in "First Match," "Assassination Nation," and "If Beale Street Could Talk." In 2019, Domingo played his final role of the decade in Natalie Portman's "Lucy in the Sky."
