J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter books served as the inspiration for the Harry Potter film series. Warner Bros. Pictures produced and distributed the eight fantasy movies in the series, ranging from Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (2001) to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 (2011). The first spin-off prequel series, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, introduced the Wizarding World shared media property in 2016.

The core narrative is around Harry's battle with Lord Voldemort, a malevolent wizard who seeks to control all wizards and Muggles (those who are not magical), become immortal, and topple the Ministry of Magic, the organization that oversees wizards.

The movie centers on Harry Potter, who lives in a cupboard beneath the stairs in the home of the Dursleys - his aunt, uncle, and cousin - who all mistreat him in the first novel, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone in the US). He finds out he is a magician when he is eleven years old.

He receives a letter of admission to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry from Hagrid, a half-giant. Harry finds out that the dark wizard Lord Voldemort killed his parents, Lily and James Potter, when he was a newborn. Both of them possessed magical abilities. Voldemort's curse seemed to kill himself when he tried to murder Harry, leaving Harry with a scar that resembled lightning on his forehead. Harry became well-known in the wizarding and witching community as a result of the incident.
