We finally learn about "Dean Cipher" in Gen V Season 2, Episode 7. Turns out he was just a vessel for Thomas Godolkin. "Cipher's" real name is Doug Brightbill. The Doug Brightbill revelation has some major implications for The Boys Season 5 if Godolkin manages to survive the events of the Gen V Season 2 finale, which streams next week.

Who is Doug Brightbill? Gen V Season 2's twist explained:

The seventh episode of Gen V Season 2 mostly revolves around Marie, Polarity, and Cate trying to get to and heal the burnt man in Cipher's custody, as they believe that the burnt man might be Thomas Godolkin. In the last act of the episode, Marie finally manages to locate the burnt man in the basement of the training room as Polarity, Jordan, Sam, and Greg fight Cipher in the room above.

Cipher seems to be winning as he controls Jordan, Sam, and Greg to fight Polarity, but the latter finally manages to beat Cipher when he unleashes the full extent of his powers. Meanwhile, Marie finally heals the burnt man after confirming his identity as Thomas Godolkin. When he is fully healed, Godolkin retains all of his powers, and as that happens, we learn the truth about "Cipher" as well.

Turns out, the man we have seen all this time in Gen V Season 2 is just a human named Doug Brightbill. He reveals that he was fired from his job at Blockbuster, and he just wants to return to his home. But there's one thing that we should remember from the third episode of this season.

Doug was under Godolkin's control for over three decades:

The seed for this twist was planted from the very beginning, and yet it did not feel like it was stretched out. The fourth episode started providing a clearer picture as the burnt form of Thomas Godolkin was introduced in the second act of the episode. We see "Cipher" take care of the burnt Godolkin. Now, in the seventh episode, we learn that Godolkin puppetted Doug's body to take care of him.

Moreover, the third episode of this season dropped the bomb that "Cipher," under the alias of "Dr. Gold," delivered Marie. Based on this revelation, it is safe to assume that Doug was under Godolkin's control for over three decades, and probably even longer.

What is Thomas Godolkin's endgame?

We already know that he is allied with Sister Sage, who is currently a part of The Seven. Considering that he is a N*zi, it is surprising that he is having a physically intimate relationship with a woman of color. However, some believe that he is using her to access Homelander. It is already known that he wants power, and as Homelander is the most powerful supe in this universe, he may aim to puppet the leader of The Seven.

While it is unclear whether Godolkin can puppet Homelander or not, if he manages to do so, then the founder of Godolkin University could be the most powerful man in the world of the series, as The Boys Season 4 finale reveals that The Seven's leader is the de facto leader. Thus, Godolkin's return in Gen V Season 2's penultimate episode takes The Boys Universe to wild places.

"School is back in session. As the rest of America adjusts to Homelander's iron fist, back at Godolkin University, the mysterious new Dean preaches a curriculum that promises to make students more powerful than ever. Cate and Sam are celebrated heroes, while Marie, Jordan, and Emma reluctantly return to college, burdened by months of trauma and loss. But parties and classes are hard to care about with war brewing between Humans and Supes, both on and off campus. The gang learns of a secret program that goes back to the founding of Godolkin University that may have larger implications than they realize. And, somehow, Marie is a part of it."

As of now, seven episodes of Gen V Season 2 are accessible via streaming on Prime Video. Binge them all before the eighth episode, which is also the season 2 finale, streams on October 22, 2025.
