Latino Performers Earn Praise from La Raza

The nominations for the 2001 American Latino Media Arts Awards have been announced. The ALMA Awards recognize and celebrate television programs featuring Latino actors and storylines.

General Hospital, Guiding Light and One Life to Live have been honored by The National Council of La Raza, the organization overseeing the ALMA Awards, with nominations for Outstanding Daytime Drama.

In the individual acting categories, the nominations expanded to include other soaps. Maurice Benard (Sonny, General Hospital), Matt Cedeno (Brandon, Days of our Lives), Mark Consuelos (Mateo, All My Children), A Martinez (Roy, General Hospital), Kamar de los Reyes (Antonio, One Life to Live) and Eddie Velez (Alex, Port Charles) all received nominations in the very crowded with talent Outstanding Actor in a Daytime Drama field. Martinez was the winner in this category last year, with Cedeno, Consuelos and Benard all also having received nominations.

For the women, Miriam Colon (Maria, Guiding Light), Gladis Jimenez (ex-Carmen, The Bold and the Beautiful), Erika Page (Roseanne, One Life to Live), Marissa Ramirez (Gia, General Hospital), and Saundra Santiago (ex-Carmen, Guiding Light) received nominations for Outstanding Actress in a Daytime Drama. Page received the award in this category last year. Santiago also received a nomination last year.

The awards will take place on April 22nd at the Pasadena Civic Center in Pasadena. ABC plans to air the ceremony on June 1st.
