Season eight of American Horror Story could be called American Soap Story because it's shaping up to have exactly the kind of casting longtime soap opera fans dream of. In addition to starring All My Children alum Kathy Bates (ex-Belle Bodelle), the anthology series now boasts iconic daytime alum Joan Collins (ex-Alexis Carrington, Dynasty; ex-Alexandra Spaulding, Guiding Light).
Series showrunner Ryan Murphy spilled the delicious news during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, stating that he is "throwing" the legendary actress into the mix that might also include Anjelica Huston.
Murphy is keeping mum on Collins' American Horror Story role as well as the theme of season eight. However, he did give a subtle tease about what fans can expect from the season that also stars Evan Peters and Sarah Paulson.
"I pitched [the theme] to [FX chief] John Landgraf today right after his TCA panel, and he loved it, but he's asked me not to say what it is," Murphy remarked during the Television Critics Association tour. "I told him and he fell out of his chair with joy. I think people will like it, it's different from what we've done before, but I always try and do the opposite of what I've done on that show."
Collins' most recent role has been as the Grand Duchess Alexandra of Oxford on The Royals, and prior to that, she starred as Crystal Hennessy-Vass on Benidorm. And though she's arguably most famous for her Dynasty role, she has quite a bit of experience in the horror genre. Notable credits include films like Dark Places, I Don't Want to Be Born, and Empire of the Ants, as well as spots on dark television series like Tales from the Crypt and Tales That Witness Madness.
