Brief Character History
Cassie is the biological daughter of renowned pianist and conductor David Renaldi, whom Dorian was romantically involved with in college. At that time he went by the name Reynolds. David took Cassie and left Dorian without a word, and she didn't know for years where her daughter was. His reason for leaving was because Dorian expected his musical career to take a back seat to her medical one. It used to be believed that since David had assumed most of his daughter's care, he felt that Cassie should go with him. Recently we have learned of the trauma of Dorian's childhood and that she asked David to take Cassie because Dorian was worried she would hurt her daughter. David took Cassie to his mother's home and planned to return for her, but his musical career got in the way. Later, when he became involved in human rights work, he stayed away out of fear for her safety. Cassie came to live with her mother, Dorian Lord in Llanview when she was a teenager. Dorian later married Herb Callison, who adopted Cassie. Cassie didn't know David Renaldi was her father when he came to Llanview until months later.
In 1985, Cassie fell in love with Rob Coronal, grandson to an infamous mobster crime family. Her mother greatly disapproved and she confronted Rob and warned him that if he didn't immediately break his engagement to Cassie, she would tell the world that his father was alive. Rob gave in, but he and Cassie soon continued their romance in secret. When his father joined the Witness Protection Program they married as they had originally planned.They eventually divorced in 1986. Cassie was married very briefly to Bo Buchanan in 1991. On the day of their wedding, Bo's presumed dead wife, Sarah, showed up at the reception. Bo returned to Sarah and Cassie's marriage to him was annulled.
Cassie then married local reverend Andrew Carpenter in 1993. In a mother-daughter confrontation, Cassie ordered Dorian out of her life for good. The heated exchange, in combination with Cassie's already high blood pressure and an accidental tumble down the stairs, caused her to go into premature labor. Little William Carpenter lived only a few hours before dying. The terrible loss drove Cassie's normally-placid husband Andrew to lash out at Dorian -- nearly strangling her to death! After that they adopted a baby boy, named River. A few years later, her attraction to fellow newspaper reporter Kevin Buchanan led to a breakup in their marriage in 1997. Cassie had a hard time trying to cope with the ending of her marriage and the loss of custody of her son, River.
Cassie found the truth about the history of mental illness that runs in her family. At this time, Kevin saved her from a burning house and was badly burned. Cassie grew jealous of the relationship between Kevin and his nurse, Barbara Graham. To keep a close watch, she hired Barbara to be her father's (David Renaldi) live-in nurse. Cassie found out that Kevin had cheated on her with Barbara and Cassie moved out of the house Kevin had bought for her and moved back in with Dorian.
She was shot shortly after by a bullet meant for Kevin from Barbara (also killing Drew), causing her to be paralyzed from the waist down. She then overheard Barbara confessing to Andrew that she was the one that killed Drew and shot Cassie. Cassie married Kevin and tortured nurse Graham by threatening to tell Bo that she did it. Finally Cassie stole a gun from Asa and went to kill Barbara. They struggled, the gun went off and Barbara was arrested. Andrew and Kevin found Cassie out on the scaffolding around the belfry, she had been able to walk for several weeks and had hid the truth from them. Because of everything that had happened, Cassie lost her mind and the last 2 years of her memory. Dorian sent her to a mental institution in Switzerland where she lives still to this day. Dorian then convinced Kevin to have the marriage annulled.
Cassie returned briefly in December 2001 to attend the wedding of her cousin Blair to Todd Manning. It is unclear if she was permanently released from the mental institution or was merely temporarily released to attend the wedding.
