The sequel to Gladiator (2000), Gladiator II is a 2024 historical epic film that was directed by Ridley Scott. The film was produced by Scott Free Productions and distributed by Paramount Pictures. David Scarpa wrote the script based on a story he co-wrote with Peter Craig.


The ensemble cast includes Connie Nielsen, Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, Fred Hechinger, Lior Raz, Derek Jacobi, and Denzel Washington. Spencer Treat Clark is replaced by Mescal, and Jacobi and Nielsen return to their roles from the first movie. The film premiered on October 30, 2024, in Sydney, Australia. It was released on November 15 in the UK and November 22 in the US.

The Irish actor Paul Mescal portrays Lucius Verus Aurelius / "Hanno" in the film. Lucius is the son of Maximus Decimus Meridius, the main character in the first movie, and the grandson of former Emperor Marcus Aurelius. To shield Lucius from assassins after his father's death, Lucilla, his mother, sent him away from Rome while he was a young boy.

The Chilean and American actor Pedro Pascal portrays General Acacius in the film. Acacius, Lucilla's husband, is a Roman army general who trained under Maximus. Despite leading a lavish life in Rome, he is frequently absent on military expeditions for the emperors.

The Danish actress Connie Neilsen portrays Lucilla in the film. Lucilla is the daughter of Aurelius, the mother of Lucius, and a former lover of Maximus. After Maximus died, she sent Lucius out of Rome to keep him safe from competitors to the imperial throne. She gets married to Acacius when Maximus dies.

The American actor Denzel Washington portrays Macrinus in the film. Macrinus is a former slave who plans to control Rome. He guides Lucius and manages a stable of gladiators. He supplies the Roman armies in Europe with food, oil, and weaponry as an arms broker.

The English actor Joseph Quinn portrays Emperor Geta in the film. Geta and his brother Caracalla share the title of co-emperor of Rome. Both of them use Lucilla's health as a tool to exert power on General Marcus Acacius. The collapse of Roman domination is seen as imminent by their leadership.

The American actor Fred Hechinger portrays Emperor Caracalla in the film. He is the co-emperor of Rome alongside his brother, Geta. Because of cognitive impairment in his brain, he is less stable than his brother and has a pet monkey named Dondus.
