Stone persuaded her parents to allow her to go to California to pursue an acting career after just one semester of high school at Xavier College Preparatory. After her mother moved to Los Angeles in January 2004, Stone attended online high school courses, worked part-time at a bakery that sold dog treats, and went to auditions for roles.

Since the name "Emily Stone" was already taken when Stone registered with the Screen Actors Guild, she uses "Emma" instead of her given name, Emily. She had her television debut as Laurie Partridge on the VH1 talent competition show "In Search of the New Partridge Family" (2004). She made a cameo on "Lucky Louie," and as Violet Trimble in the Fox drama "Drive" (2007).

Stone has a career as a voice actress as well. She voiced a character in the 2012 criminal video game "Sleeping Dogs," for which she received a nomination for Best Performance by a Human Female at the Spike Video Game Awards. Additionally, she has provided the voices of characters in many animated movies, including "Marmaduke" (2010) and "The Croods" (2013).

Stone didn't make her Hollywood breakthrough until she starred in the popular adolescent comedy "Easy A" in 2010. Her portrayal of Olive Penderghast earned her the MTV Movie Award for Best Comedic Performance and nominations for both the BAFTA Rising Star Award and the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy. Subsequently, she featured in several successful films which were huge box office successes.
