English actor and filmmaker Andy Serkis has won 43 awards and received 63 award nominations across his acclaimed career. Known for his work in performance capture and voice work, he was born on April 20, 1964, in Ruislip, London. He gained recognition for portraying Gollum in “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy from 2001- 2003, and in “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” in 2012. He also portrayed Caesar in “War for the Planet of the Apes (2017)," “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014)," and “Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011)."


His other notable mocap roles in film include, Captain Haddock in “The Adventures of Tintin (2011), Supreme Leader Snoke in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015),” as well as live appearances in “Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) and “The Prestige (2006).” Serkis pursued a degree in Visual Arts at Lancaster University and began his professional acting career in 1985 at the Duke’s Playhouse. As an apprentice of Jonathan Petherbridge, he featured in fourteen different plays consecutively.


Additionally, he established his own virtual production studio, The Imaginarium Studios in London, in 2012. Serkis has directed films such as the 2018 fantasy drama “Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle,” the 2018 TV movie “The Ruins of Empires,” and the 2021 sci-fi action film “Venom: Let There Be Carnage.” His forthcoming projects include voicing Benjamin and directing the 2025 adaptation of George Orwell’s “Animal Farm." He will portray Alfred Pennyworth in Matt Reeves' 2027 crime drama “The Batman Part II.” Serkis is also all set to reprise his role as Gollum in the upcoming installment in the Lord of the Rings franchise, “The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum (2027).”

Serkis’ performance in the Lord of the Rings trilogy earned him seventeen prestigious awards including a Saturn Award in 2003, two Critics Choice Awards in 2003 and 2004, an Empire Award in 2004, and a Screen Actors Guild Award in 2004, among many more. He also received twelve awards for his work in the “Planet of the Apes” franchise including a Saturn Award in 2012 and an Empire Award in 2015.


In addition, he received a BAFTA Special Award in 2020 for “Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema” and the Phoenix Critics Circle’s Special Achievement Award in 2017. He was also awarded a Daytime Emmy Award in 2021 for his guest performance as Mayor of Mistrinaut in “The Letter for the King (2020).” Serkis has also received multiple awards recognizing his vocal and motion capture performances.

In 2008, Serkis received a Golden Globe Award nomination for his portrayal of Ian Brady in the biographical crime drama “Longford (2006).” He was also nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award in 2009 for playing Rigaud in the romance mystery series “Little Dorrit (2008).” His performances in the “Plant of the Apes” franchise and the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy have earned him more than thirty award nominations over the years.


More recently, his role as Kino Loy in the Star Wars prequel series “Andor (2022),” brought him further recognition, including nominations for a Saturn Award, an OFTA Television Award, and an INOCA TV Award. Serkis also has an ongoing association with the “Star Wars” universe, as he has depicted Supreme Leader Snoke in several films, including “Star Wars: Episode VII– The Force Awakens (2015).” His role in the movie also earned him an MTV Movie Award nomination in 2016.
